I have a set of the ninja rings that I have recently pulled out, dusted off, and have been trying to work out a routine with. I have Shoot Ogawa's DVD and have gotten comfortable with most of the material on it, although I do want to keep this in my hands only so I don't use the spinning on the tabletop, and I do confess that the one-handed linking move is outside of my comfort zone as I can only accomplish it very sporadically, and even then it does not look smooth.
I would like to find additional references to learn other moves/routines with these rings. I am considering buying the Messado DVD (I assume that the moves he teaches would work with the ninja rings as well?). My concern is if there are enough new moves on his DVD to justify purchasing it, and I would be most appreciative if someone who owns both would chime in on this. Also, I would greatly welcome any other recommendations for resources to learn new moves that would work with the ninja rings. Sometime in the wee small hours this morning I did magically somehow stumble onto a new opening sequence that I think could have potential, and of course it is always great to put one's own spin onto an effect, but realistically without any additional outside help I may be too old and feeble to even hold the rings by the time I work out a full routine with them. (The base of my right pinky aches like crazy....lol).

Messado Rings offers more moves...some pretty difficult to master. I use a modified version similar to Shoots routine that requires the more basic links and unlinks...I also keep it short and sweet for laymen. Magicians are impressed with a variety of moves and fancy flourishes which can cumulate into a 2-3 minute routine...lay audiences, however get the jist of the trick...solid rings link and unlink. After a while the monotony of continuously linking and unlinking the rings in a variety of clever ways seems to take some of the initial awe away and turn it into a ,"lets see another trick attitude".

Thank you Peppermeat and Mary for your replies to my query. I think for now I will take a day off of banging my right pinky finger and then plunge back into it full speed ahead. I still may pick up the Messado DVD soon; however, for now I guess I will continue to work on what I have already learned from Shoot Ogawa and perhaps discover a few more things on my own.

I felt your pain longer than I like to admit.

Bluzz.. I think you need a lighter grip on the rings and keep your grip tighter at your thumb and not so much (if at all) near your pinkie.
That should reduce the pain.

If the cause of your pinky pain is the Crash Link, then move the ring down a little more. When Shoot was here lecturing, I had him explain his grip, and was surprised how he held the ring. It is not exposed as the base of the hand puffs out and hides all very well. If you think it is to revealing, then you are holding it correctly, is my advice. You see it, then will not.

As for the Messado DVD, I recall reading somewhere that a few of his "core moves" can only be done with his rings. (I don't mean that you literally cannot do them with other rings but the size and weight of his made some kind of difference ). I do not own a set, I am going from memory of why I never got that DVD. I own a "regular set 10" or so. A small set of Royal (about the same size as ninja rings) I have the ninja DVD but sold my rings and use the cheaper royal ones. I also have a miniature set of Dragonfly rings. (So small you couldn't even hurt a pinky).

I too have tried to take up the Ninja Rings over the past months. I recommend the Massado DVD. I have both of Shoot's DVD's and Messado's.. Massado's routine is more "in the hands," vs Shoots where he uses the table twice. The rings are essentially the same (weight and gauge are slightly different) and I see no reason why either set of moves aren't usable with either set of rings. Massado offers supplemental sections of "advanced" moves. Some are interchangeable with moves in his routine and some are just flashy, high energy supplemental moves... some of these moves are (IMO) knacky. In the end, given I'm still a newbie at the rings, I am using sequences from both Shoot and Messado that flow sequentially and are in my area of competence and comfort. I'm about ready to target a couple of the advanced moves to incorporate over time.

Are Shoot's rings similar to Massado's aside from weight and guage, i.e. key ring ? Is it possible to purchase Shoot's DVD separate? I have Massado's and have been practicing, I do find one of the moves to be hit and miss and inconsistent which makes me uncomfortable to even attempt it at this time and am always looking at other material as well.

I suggest to work out your own handling and sequences, as there seem to be hundreds of things you can do. Try not to look like someone elses way.
