Hello Conjurers,
I was finally able to find an online magic shop here in India that has several products at a decent rate. I am picking up some stuff (bundle of ropes, sponge balls, thumb tip and multi color ropes). I might also pick up a copper and silver coin. While browsing I happened to come upon something called an Okito Box. Now my brief search in this forum showed that Okito Box is used for plenty of cool coin tricks. However, I am not sure if it is too early for me to buy an Okito Box. Should I go for it? Also while I am there, would you guys suggest anything else that a new magician should pick up from there? They do seem to have most magic stuff available. Thanks, Soumyajit

Hi Soumyajit and welcome to the Café.
It sounds like you're just getting started and you have already picked up more than a few things (ropes, sponge balls, TT etc). Each one of those items has a wealth of magic just in its own brand. There are 100s of tricks you can do with each of those. You might want to pick out a book. I'd suggest Bill Tarr's "Now you see it, now you don't". It has routines for those items as well as coin tricks..... If you want coin suggestions I would say pick up 5 half dollars and Bobo's. There is a DVD set available on some of the material in Bobo's. You can also add a shell and a C/S coin, although I was suggest you start with the basic props and learn a few basic sleights first. This will help you when you move on to routines with a shell, C/S coin and Okito boxes. There are books,DVDs, downloads,E-books and ton of information out there. It can get frustrating if you skip the basics. As for if you should get an Okito box or not. Of course you should. Explore anything and everything you can within magic. What I have found that works best for me is to focus on one prop, sleight, book ect at a time. When I first saw the Okito box I didn't care for it. I eventually picked one up, played with it for awhile and dropped it in the junk drawer. Then a few years ago I picked it back up and began working with it again. There is A LOT of stuff out there on the coin boxes way more than I ever thought. enjoy your journey, Joe

The okito box is a utility prop. If you are just learning coin magic, learn the basics first. Then, adding props will certainly add to your repetoire and versatilty. But first be sure to get the basics down, the concealments, some vanishes, reproductions, etc.
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

No, you don't need an okito box.
It's a prop that the audience can't relate to, and that's more than often used in addition to suspicious moves. If you want to show off your dexterity to other magicians, sure, get one. Otherwise, you'll spend your time and money better learning magic that can be done just with coins. P! |

My own humble feeling is that to say "just learn straight coin magic, and don't bother with an Okito box" seems rather akin to saying "just learn ball magic, and don't bother with any cups" (as in the Cups & Balls).
If you have an opportunity to pick one up -- especially if it's an opportunity that is not an everyday opportunity, such as if this is a special and somewhat rare visit to a shop where they are available -- then I'd say go for it. But that's just me.

Hi Soumyajit. I say yes you should buy one. There are some very simple but very effective routines that you can learn with it right away to start. It is a great prop that can be very entertaining. It might just inspire you to continue in coin magic and work on some of the more advanced stuff with or without the box.

Griff, my man! Long time dude, hope all is well. And I'm still loving those magnificent coins, and I've even gotten a bit better at cards.
And Sou, you've gotten a lot of good suggestions from some solid folks here…Lots of good ways, either which way you go. Good journey my friend.

Definitely Marion, glad to see masters of the game guiding me along. For the time being, I have decided to pass on the idea of getting the box. I don't think it will go out of stock soon. I will pick it up after a month or two when I am a bit more comfortable with standard moves.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions Soumyajit

I have had very good results with the Okito Box over the years. When I used to demo it in my local magic shop many years ago I just did the standard coins through hand using the very simple move and I sold a lot of them. Once you get the basics down you won't be sorry when you buy one. MB my friend, it is good to see you again! Haven't been on here for awhile (life and business gets in the way I guess), but thanks for the warm welcome back! SO glad you are putting those coins to such good use!
