Does anyone know the particulars of producing CO2 smoke as a cover for a production of the magician? How big does the cylinder need to be? Thanks!

Co2 is a pretty cool thing when it is done right. However..it is very finicky...if the ambient temperature and humidity is wrong....you'll get nothing.
We have used it before....and Zigmont here at the Café, is an expert on on it. The hard part is getting solenoid actuated valves, if you want to release it other than my hand. The valve must be able to withstand the harsh sub zero temperatures. Getting ones that have the right size orifice is not easy either. If you get it all worked out...one good tip it to use a "venturi" tube....it flairs out at the end..and will help the Co2 shoot out wider. Circle seals out of Florida will have some of what you need. there is also a DMX controlled "intelligent" Co2 fixture. It comes out of the U.K. and is a great unit, but pricey. One last word of caution....you can get seriously hurt by the Co2 as well as ruptured lines. Hope my rambling helps....be safe.

Why not use a fog machine and safe fog?

Thanks for bringing that up Dennis.... I forgot to mention what we have gone to since using Co2. We use Look Viper II fog machines. They are the only fog machines built to shoot straight up and straight down. We are using them to create a 25 foot tall cover for a production. We use fast dissipating fog fluid....the fog is gone in less than 3 seconds...totally gone. They have DMX built into the unit...so control is very easy.
We are dealers for Theatre Effects, the only company in the U.S. selling these German made machines. Email if you want more info on a great fogger.

If you really want CO2, then I would suggest using fire extinguishers. It may sound low-tech, but it is the safest and cheapest way to produce a quick-dissipating smoke burst. Simply paint them black, and have them secretly released by stage hands.
-Hope this helps!

With all due respect theatrefreak89, I would never substitute anything for the use of a fire extinguisher.
The nice yellow powder residue on your equipment, the stage and the proximity of the audience would never be a good thing! Have you tried using it in your shows as a substitute based on personal experience? |

ReyRey...I think you may have misunderstood which fire extinguisher theatrefreak was referring to. He is referring to CO2 type. The only thing inside is CO2.

I have been using CO2 fire extinguishers for years -- noise being the only problem on release.
But, for dropping, drifting slow fog for a curtain -- the old water barrel seems to be the best. Pump up - drop down and spread.

A little dry ice in a hot water bucket & a fan does wonders.
