I'm helping a new young magician. He's learning the sleights, etc. but would like 3 or 4 5-trick self-working card trick sets to do while he develops his "chops".
Can you suggest a 5-trick self-working card trick set? Thanks, Ted

The Giobbi Light is organized in chapters of 3 routines that go together. Also, getting any of the Karl self-working books should allow you to pick 5 effects that he can do.

Thanks for the two replies. I'm surprised I didn't get more. There have to be more ideas out there.

I looked for "Interdimension" in Close Up Card Magic and can't find it. Are you sure that's the right title or the right book. Thanks, Ted

Hi Ted,
Sorry about the misinformation. Eddie Taytelbaum's Inter-Dimension can be found in Best of Friends (1982). It's an effect where the magician causes a playing card to mysteriously penetrate the card case. By the way, all the 5 effects listed above can be found in Harry Lorayne's Best Ever! Collection. |

Without wishing to sound rude surely if your teaching someone magic you must know more than 5 self working card effects yourself ?

Yes, I know many more than 5 self-working card effects. The trick is to blend them together smoothly. Many good self-workers require a set-up. Coming up with a set that uses set-ups in more than one effect and doesn't require one to look through the deck to find the cards for the next trick are difficult to come up with. A routine should flow from one effect to another with no "fumbling" around in between tricks to set up the next one. Plus a good set should build. I have a couple of my own but am looking for others from experienced people. One of which you appear not to be. Ted

In Scarne on Card Tricks, there are several that require very little or NO set-up. Check out:
Page 11: Upside Down Deck -- a mini-Triumph, no set-up Page 13: Traveling Aces -- a 4-Ace Assembly (I still use this often, despite knowing more "reputable" assemblies) Page 23: It's a Natural -- no set-up (check this out, uses a book or box of matches -- really clever!) Page 138: My Lucky Card -- impromptu prediction effect, no set-up Thrown in You Do As I Do; Gemini Twins; or (if you aren't doing My Lucky Card, which uses the same principle) Darryl's Untouched (also known as Dream Card in some circles). Now make up with Warren, Ted. Your reply was civil until you accused him of being inexperienced. |

Thank you for your reply. After many posts on the Café one gets "fluff" replies. I took yours to be one of those. Sorry! I'm 73 years old and been doing magic since I was 5. I've done every type of magic and am currently (last 15 years into mentalism). My problem is I've forgotten more tricks, particularly card tricks than I can remember. The problem with putting together a self-working card routine besides what I mentioned above is that the really impactful self-workers often require a large (full-deck) set-up. This trick should probably be the closer of a routine. But, the full-deck set-up makes that difficult. Therein lies my problem with developing a self-working routine. Ted

No worries Ted as you say these days there are a lot of not so good magicians about mainly due to youtube that we do myself included jump to the wrong conclusion at times, perhaps if you included a couple of basic sleights into the mix it would make things easier.
That said and in the spirit of good will here are 3 simple but very effective ones that can be done with any deck in use to help you : An Impossible Conclusion by John Carey which is my personal favourite ( I've altered the handling personally however the original teaching is self working and can be found on Volume 2 of John Carey's 24Seven Project ). Another great effect is The Eight of diamonds trick by Paul Gordon from his Card Startlers dvd, once again I have altered the handling by changing the name of the card you reveal to say the six of diamonds which makes it self working and by using the Cameron Francis handling allows for less counting which makes it a little more natural. Out Of This World from the Matthew J. Dowden dvd volume 2 1 deck,14 tricks, 24 hours which is a streamlined version which is easy to do as are all the effects on this 2 volume set. All of these are very strong and commercial whilst requiring no set up.....Once again good luck. |

If you consider out of this world, consider doing neither blind nor stupid from Tamariz right before. It is self-working, really strong, and It sets you up for out of this world!!!

Ted-
I do agree that some full deck stacks produce amazing routines but there are shuffled deck ones I can think of that are very strong. To end with a stacked deck you could performed one of the many shuffled deck self workers out there and then before your big finale perform an effect that sets you up for a bigger finish. For instance I will do the first phase of this routine (link at end) if I want to close with out of this world. I just perform the first two phases leaving out the third one. https://youtu.be/cqdlKNcjKVU Or I will start stacked with a suit in order to do John Bannon play it straight. I will start with a routine that maintains the suit In order, then I will the do play it straight and I will close with Paul Wilson TRI Cs which is a amazing shuffle deck routine that kills. I think a lot about routining self workers and have a bunch of sets I do. I find it fun challenge combining them together. Ryan |

Whilst I'm definitely not knocking the other fantastic versions out there including the excellent one above what's nice about Out Of This World from the Matthew J. Dowden dvd volume 2 1 deck,14 tricks is that no set up is required.
