Hey there. Im sure you're already frustrated just from the topic question haha. Trust me, I am not going to ask what the "best" ITR is.
Instead. I would just like a recommendation for my specific needs. Doing a Café search has me confused and frustrated. So, let me just lay it out. This is what I want out of a reel. Inexpensive. I don't need a pro reel. this is my first one, and I just want to play with it and see if a reel is something I want to really use long-term. Something along the 20-30 mark, trying to keep it on the cheaper side for what I need, rather than getting the most expensive in my price range. Strong Thread - Im new to ITR work, so the thread, I would rather have a bit stronger, than a bit more invisible. Id rather learn the situations I shouldn't use it, rather than never use it because I keep breaking it. At least, for my first one. I really only plan on (at this point) using it for a PK touch routine, MAYBE a haunted deck, and a couple simple levitations. Electric, Mechanical, other? I don't know. I don't need anything fancy. I want durability, and easy to use, easy to fix. Hassle free. I want it to come out, not break, and go back in when I'm done. Simple. Any suggestions for a first reel just to get the feel for? (I can look into "pro reels" if I end up really getting into it) I'm not there yet. I was looking at this reel, but wanted to ask before I pull the trigger. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S16125 I could spend bit more than 14.00 to get something a bit better, just not really sure what is a good all-around one that will be more fun to use than frustrating. Maybe this one? http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S3830 A little more than I wanted to spend, but there doesn't seem to be a middle ground. Thanks! |

Get a "bill snatcher", if you can find one.

Michael sells an inexpensive one with silk and routine. Not high quality, but worth working with to determine if you want to pursue.

Bill snatchers and the scarf thru mike reel are a totally different kind of reel than what you are looking for. They do both have a place in magic though. The $14 one is fine. It is pretty much the same one / type I started with. You will be able to levitate a bill or other light object (even do a haunted deck routine) I would get that and if you like it, go from there.

Get an alpha reel with vectra thread. The thread is strong, so it doesn't break as easy. If it does break, you simply grab the end of the thread and stick a wax ball on it. With the other reels you will spend hours trying to fix them, and in my case throwing them away and buying another one. I went through 4 - 5 reels before I finally bought an Alpha - I've been using it now for about 2 years. You spend $60 for it but it will be a one time purchase, and you will eliminate $100 worth of headaches. Trust me on this one - I've been there. Jim

Im sure I will learn to use it over time, but my primary focus is doing a PK touch routine with it. I never liked elastic loops, I broke too many. snagged them, etc etc. And when it was a pack of 5 for 20 bucks (or whatever it was back then) wasn't worth it. Hopefully this will be more suitable. I guess the next logical step is asking for a couple sources of reel material? I don't believe I've ever come across anything on reels (Besides Invisible, which only looks so so to me) Thanks again bud! |

Oh, one more thing before I forget. Can someone fill me in on what "Spinnerettes" are? I remember seeing a trailer for them where a bottle cap (i think) spun from hand to hand. Looked cool, have no idea what that's all about, or even something worth looking into, Is that a reel type thing also? Or is that a totally different type of apparatus?

This caught my eye too. It's 60 also. Don't know much about it either. Should I be considering this "ingenious tool" over the alpha reel? :p

Absolutely not. It is a totally different animal than a reel. They are also one and done, not reuseable.

I also have Surya's device. It's actually (2) alpha reels stuck together. Great device, but limited in what you can do, plus it's rather large and requires a large "hiding space". Get the alpha. If you later want to try Surya's, I'll sell you mine at a great deal.

Jim! You didn't tell me that Sourcery Manufacturing is out of business!
I placed an order. They got paid, and I think I was just ripped off! NOT HAPPY! |

I just bought something recently and received it with no problem. I'm not sure what's going on. Jim
