Last night I had the immense pleasure of seeing Paul Draper perform at our local theatre. In short, his show was phenomenal. Im not going to get into the details of his show and what he performed. Ive always thought that was a bit taboo, and if you wanted to know what someone did, you should go see and support the show. Rather, Im going to talk about the overall experience of the show and Paul himself.
This is the first time Ive ever seen him live, but Paul has genuinely been my favorite performer ever since I discovered him years ago. His presentations, scripting, demeanor and character, his storytelling, the ability to be able to cater to children in the audience on the spur of the moment…all help create a world class performer. Ive studied his clips and interviews along the internet and listened to his teachings through his lectures over the years. The amount of thinking that goes into everything he does and says makes him the epitome of a professional entertainer. However, as great of the performance that it was, the highlight of the evening was not the show. It was getting to hang out with Paul afterwards at a local pub and him willing to let me pick his brain. We talked about show structure, preserving the mystery vs. explaining it, cold reading, shared horror stories, success stories, and everything in between. Paul wrote on a napkin his show from beginning to end and we examined why each piece was performed, what he could have did in substitute, but why he ultimately chose to go with what he did. I knew Paul was a stand up guy, but he far exceeded my expectations. I know he was tired, and even a little frustrated because the event planner of the theater did not do his job and promote the show properly. There was a good turn out for our small town, but there could have been a lot more. Despite all of this, Paul was still willing to hang out after the show and discuss all of the ins and outs of everything. He could have very easily treated me like all the rest of the audience and just took a picture and signed a card, but he went above and beyond to make me feel welcomed. At the pub, it was understood in advance that I would pay for his meal, however, when I got back from the restroom he had already taken care of not only his, but mine as well. In short, if you ever get the opportunity to see Paul perform, do yourself a favor and do not pass it up. He is one of the most experienced and successful performers out there. Thanks again, dear friend, for an evening Ill never forget. Till next time, Matthew |

Great story Matthew.
I can only hope that one day I might be able to end up in the same boat and repay to others the same grace that has been shown to me throughout the years. Thank-you for sharing this. |
