Can't you take a perfect mental magic Confabulation trick and turn it into mentalism by having close answers rather than exact and performing it as a mentalist and not a magician?
That's just a hypothetical example, but surely we can take a lot of mental magic tracks and take the magic out of them and frame the whole thing as a piece of mantalism? Can we?

No. Mentalism is much more than just framing.

To borrow a quote form Leddington's "Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism," "the magician does not want you to believe that magic is real; rather, you should believe that it is impossible, yet—as far as you can tell—it is happening anyway. This is the cognitive bind the magician wants you in."
A Mentalists often wishes the observer to believe that the demonstrated mental powers or that they have a heightened facility in extraordinary abilities already accepted by the audience. The magician (as noted above) desires the audience to accept the demonstrated ability as impossible. Big difference! Is that "framing?" Partially, but also a consideration of the expectations of the audience. A magician cannot do a series of "impossible" demonstrations and then shift to Mentalism. Old time performers like Ormand McGill did perform both, but only as different segment broken by an intermission with the Mentalism coming last. The implication was that by "pretending at the impossible" one can gain heightened abilities in paranormal functions. Effects now considered as "mental magic" were never performed in the fist half, and any effect commonly linked with a magician such as using playing cards never employed in the second phase. I do not know if modern audiences can make such a mental shift of expectations or that many performers can support both characters. I did learn first hand from Arnold Furst that when he was asked to perform impromptu in a restaurant or lecture, he had been studying the audience in order to decide whether to offer a magic effect, Mentalism demonstration, hypnotism or just tell a story. He started collecting performance data from the moment he walked in, either to aid in "volunteer" selection later on, or to support some mind-reading effort. He would even plant subvocal instructions about the room in case they were needed. Again, none of that would probably work today with patrons on an electronic devices and few assumptions about "common knowledge" possible. The point is that while mixing both forms of "Mystic Arts" is possible it is usually ill advised. With reference to the thread title there is no "Mental Magic Theory." There is Performance Magic theory, Cognitive Theory and Mentalism Theory (and others). There are also practical lessons as to what works and what does not for a particular audience -- and your character. It is difficult enough to be a good "you." No need to try and be someone else.
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst

Judging by your sig line I'd say your falafel is sitting in a very square room with really sharp angles.
