Count me in as one of those who was skeptical about PS the first time I glanced though it (I was young and I was doing magic, where methods are usually direct/surefire).
Fast forward some time (this happened about 15 years ago, I was a teenager), and I see a magician friend of mine doing magic for laymen. He asks someone to think of a card, and before the spectator names the card he removes one card. I'm at a vantage point behind my friend, so I see the face of the card before the spectator names it, there are no funny moves. No way the spectator is going to name that card... but he does! I'm scratching my head. But it goes on... "Let's try it again", he says. He removes a second card, and again I can see the card before it gets named. "Think of another card". I was already baffled by the first one, no way he could do it twice... but he did! No funny moves or sleights! I still remember which cards they were to this day. It was directly from Psychological Subtleties. Throughout the day I saw him do it a few times to different groups (it was a trade show gig, I think I was handing out pamphlets while he did magic). Now, did it work every time as clean as that first time I saw it? No, but it seemed to work more times than it should have (mathematically speaking). A few years later, in one of his firsts TV shows, I see Derren ask someone to think of a card, and visualize it in a big TV screen... and I remembered reading about this in PS! Definitely not a beginner book, not everything will be spoon fed and in a full routine with all the outcomes... but then again the name of the book should have been a hint- Psychological Subtleties. This reminds me... how come I still don't have volumes 2 and 3? Guess I'll have to add them to my Christmas list! |

Psychological Subtleties definitely enhance your magic ability expolentially, that is when you already performing a lot and looking to take you performance to the next level.
I'm curious to know if there is any other good book in the related subject. |
