Now I've heard of this & to be honest I wouldn't even attempt it before everyone jumps on me, I'm just curious as to the methods.
Has anyone ever set their head on fire? Does anyone actually perform it at the moment? Are you gimmicked to the hilt or what? I thought this would make an interesting conversation!!! Mark

I don’t really know what you are asking.
Are you referring to the special F/X that uses a gel and actually sets fire to the seemingly bare head? If so, one is not gimmicked to the hilt, but has a thin veneer of a gel like protection on which is put a flammable substance that is set afire. The protection only lasts for about a minute. And the gag is dangerous. This is a film gag and doesn’t look all that good up-close and personal. I was on set once and watched a professional fire-gag stunt person get badly burned when her team did not extinguish the flames fast enough. That told me that I would never set my head on fire! Hey, I stick torches in my mouth regularly, set my tongue on fire, spew flames and get minor burns from time to time. I will never even attempt this stunt. Or are you talking about the very old Fakir stunt? The stunt where a towel (rag) is placed on top of a person’s head (in India, the person performing this stunt was usually a child or small woman), a shallow pan placed on top of the towel, and some sticks and oily rags on the pan, and the mess is set on fire and allowed to burn for several minutes while the performer sits quietly, in no apparent discomfort, and often acting as if in a trance (that’s to sell the act!) There is less danger in this trick than the earlier version. Less fire to begin with and the head is not set on fire, but rather a fire is built on the head. The gaff is very low Tec and been around for centuries. It is not a difficult trick to pull off; it is just “so-what” by today’s standards. I staged the latter trick as part of fire-eating act that I performed at a Renaissance Faire one season. I used my then 11-year-old daughter and lit my torches from the flames burning on her head. The hardest part for her was sitting still and balancing the stuff on her head. Our finale was to set her hands afire with my torches and striking a pose (used Fickle Fire Gimmicks for her hand flames). Her part was boring to her and I could not talk her into continuing the act! I did have Department of Social Services interview me and have me prove that my poor, sweet, young, daughter was in no danger! If they only knew!

I just heard of people setting their heads on fire.
At festivals and suchlike. I assumed it was an extension of fire-eating/juggling etc. I guess it would be the Fakir stunt if anything.....or maybe it's just a myth. Who knows? Cheers! Mark

I'm surprised there haven't been videos of this on Youtube..people seem to be getting crazier everyday...or is it dumber?

I've seen people using a hat with a container ontop which they set fire to, for any one who remembers 'The Crazy World of Arthur Brown'. Also Flea from the RHCP has done similar stunts.

Wow, I remeber seeing Arthur Brown on the old Mike Douglas.
I also remember seeing someone get in and out of a burning tank of liquid many years ago on one of the late nite shows |

A friend of mine saw Mr Brown at a Uni gig where he came onstage with his head on fire tripped and the set burnt down!! Ahh the good old days before health and safety took away all the fun!
