Hello I am looking for any tricks or routines which are good to be done casually at school, cards are good but a bit deliberate and I never really get the opportunity.Any suggestions for visual magic with ordinary items found in a school or items very easy to carry? thanks

Dorian...
You've never bothered to check in at "New To Magic". Did you READ what Mary wrote, in response to your first post in "Our New Arrivals??? She explained very clearly to you that we don't expose how tricks are done here. An old British magician, S. H. Sharpe, wrote, many years ago, that, Those who think that magic consists of doing tricks, are strangers to magic. Tricks are only the crude residue from which the lifeblood of magic has been drained." I started PERFORMING, at age 13, in October of 1945. I did two shows for an "honorarium" ($3.00 each!)for my dad's lodge, and a church group. My third show, for the local Jr. High School, turned me into a part time pro'! I made $26 in 35 minutes. (A hamburger and a coke, cost $.10 in those days. Throughout my high school days. I was getting $15 to $20 for 30 minutes. My buddies were earning 50 cents an hour bagging groceries.

I did not want anything revealed.I merely asked what others considered visual magic which was portable and impromptu and available in a school environment.I was looking for a title of a book containing such magic which I would learn and work on not just the trick but the presentation.I completely understand magic IS NOT revealed here I was simply looking for a recommendation from people with experience.Obviously I call them tricks but naturally I understand you do not just buy tricks and if you can I do not want to!

The new addition of "Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic" (Martin Gardner)
I helped get the first edition published in the '70s. It's out of print. I loaned my copy, and it was never returned. I don't loan books anymore. The new edition is now available. It is not cheap! I don't know of any available book that "specializes" in what you are looking for. TARBELL (8 VOLUMES @ about $20.00/volume.) has a lot of material that CAN be impromptu. Jay Marshall put out a VHS tape about 30 years ago (Joe Stevens, pub.)titled: "Table Crap", but it is mostly gags and bits of business, not tricks. Karl Fulves published a relatively inexpensive series of paper bound books. I don't know if they're still in print. Dennis Haney (Denny & Lees Magic Shop, Rosedale, Maryland --near Baltimore, Maryland) stocks a lot of used books.

As someone who spent most of the early years of high school doing magic to all of my classmates I will give you a piece of advice. Not a trick, but something that I found to be more valuable. Never start the magic in school, never ask if you can do magic for someone. If you do that, at least in high-school you become the kid who wants to learn magic because he is insecure. I found you have two options, do magic when you are asked to, or simply do it. I used to sit at my desk and lift my pencil off the desk a little bit with loops until someone noticed, and they will because everyone is bored and looking around. They will freak out and your off to the races, or you can do magic outside of school and wait for a friend to ask you to do magic in school. If all else fails ask your best friend to ask you to show them something and then incorporate more and more people.
I used to have teachers throw out the first twenty minutes of class because they wanted to see what everyone was talking about. I'd go up in front of the class and do a little set right out of my backpack. Other advice for highschool: Never use anything that looks like a magic object unless it is a joke Make sure every trick you do, or most of them, are super easy to explain, that way it spreads like juicy gossip and you are famous in two or three days. Stick with visual stuff if you can Don't take yourself to seriously High school can be a brutal place, but it is also a captive mostly bored audience just itching to see something new. |

Rubber band tricks such as crazy man's handcuffs are very portable and good.

You could do a "magical" science experiment? Hint: The speed of light is different in oil and water. Experiment with clear objects.
It also depends on the scale of your performance. Whether your performance for your school is; a classroom or library setting with maybe one or two classes (30-60 people)? Or is it an assembly where the entire school is in the gym/auditorium (500+ people?). What is the age of the students at the school? Is it a elementary school where something like an ambitious card and a no bully routine would be great? Or is it a high school where you may want to perform different content, maybe something for complex and analytical? Maybe something spooky or with fire? "Swallowing" a balloon? Thread from eye? The last few you probably would not want to perform for an elementary school.
