Sorry I am late in posting this review, my apologies Tom. It has been a very crazy past few weeks. Tom did send me a review copy and when I received the pdf I did read the book but I do not like to post my thoughts after one read. So I finally re-read the book and now will post my thoughts.
First, I have to say that I really enjoy Tom's writing style. Some books are very hard to keep interested in but this was not the case for me with Tom's book. As previously mentioned Tom has a unique gift in the ability to create an atmosphere (story telling) for a routine in which everybody watching will feel emotionally involved. Mentalism can be presented in a very dry manner which we all know will cause the audience to check out leaving you struggling to create those amazing/astonishing moments everyone is looking for. In this book Tom sometimes actually writes out a scripted routine and if he doesn't Tom gives examples using these subtlety phrases that will help you in understanding how to create an environment that will "emotionally catch or grab" the spectator that will enhance the whole experience for the participant and audience. I find that information and knowledge to be invaluable. Toms method used in a lot of the effects is very interesting. Tom does state in the book that the actual gimmick used in a lot of the effects in the book is not an original innovation but Tom's way of using the gimmick in combination with another principle to which he created the gimmick in this book is original. I will admit that I have not read every book or have even come close to reading every book out there in Mentalism but I have not come across Tom's creation before and how he uses it and believe his statement to be true. As I have not yet tried using Tom's described method in the book I do believe that his method/process would almost be impossible to back-track due to the way Tom uses the gimmick in combination with the principle. In addition, I find a lot of the reveals for the effects in the book to be more natural than just "think of a name.......turn over the card......that's the name you were thinking of". Without giving to much away, the process allows you to hit thought of information confidently and also possibly hit other information asked of a spectator. I find that the way Tom presents a lot of the effects in conjunction with a confident hit and a possible hit allows for a more believable and enjoyable outcome for the participant. In the book there is one section entitled "Magic as Illustration". It's only one page but it really got me thinking about what outcome I want the participant to feel and think after a demonstration/routine. Great info Tom! Another effect in the book called "Tears of Angels" is very different than the other effects in the book in that it uses poetry for the dialog. I never have come across this before. Tom is very blunt in saying that a lot of performers will not use this because of the poetry. I do agree with RicoGood's review above in that the method used in part of this piece is very interesting and entertainers that are very creative will definitely find a way to incorporate this in a piece. Will I ever try this approach, using poetry as the dialog? Not sure to be honest. But I do believe in the right atmosphere I can see how it could be powerful especially with the method used to create some crazy visuals. I will be back to post more on the other routines included in the book that do not use poetry or Tom's gimmick/method that I mentioned. But so far, even though I did receive a review copy, I believe there is a lot of very good material and thoughts from Tom that one will definitely find helpful and usable. This book does not strike me as strictly mentalism. It's more of a magical mentalism journey per say. IMHO. Will post more soon.... RNK

As mentioned earlier, Tom will be doing his first-ever lecture workshop next month in Las Vegas with me, Bill Montana, and Mystic Alexandre. Tom will be teaching other things that didn't make this book. PM me if you're interested in attending.

Hello,
The Book of Wonders (along with my Book of Light) will no longer be available after Sunday, the 29th. I am stepping back from magic, as there are other, more pressing ventures I need to pursue. The Hidden Thoughts series will continue, due to its nature, and the Monthly Free Magic series will continue for the remainder of the 12 months that I promised. But after my last couple card magic projects are released over the course of the next few weeks, I'm out. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read my magic and mentalism work, and it is my hope that these writings have impacted you on a level deeper than learning methods. In Magic, Tom Phoenix |

3Hey guys,
The Book of Wonders....what a wonderful title for a book full of hidden gems, and ideas. Literally upon reading the book which is about 135 pages long, you will want to make some of these up to perform. Lets go over them: The Sharpie Gimmmick: a tool that you will use for multiple routines and ideas, not hard to make and will literally take you 15-30 min and you are off and running. Reminds me a lot of something that Kenton Knepper would use or Bob Cassidy. Great routine to use for confabulation, prediction effects, sky is the limit. Single writing: First routine using your new tool as described above. great pictures to follow along, and great idea and method. you can vary it any way you want. Moments Lost: Great routine using business cards and a sharpie marker.Reminds me of something similar that Looch put out on his Penguin Live 2 Lecture. There are 2 methods taught. Convergence: If booktests are your thing, or if you are tired of doing the same one, this is worth a look, and well worth making it up. Basically its a gimmick that is hidden in plain sight and you can do wonders with this idea/tool Vale of Stars: Similar to Single Writing from above, but with more added subtleties. Deals with guessing a persons star sign. Tears of Angels: Different than the rest of the book as you create poetry with your magic or a sense of mysticism. You will need to purchase something, but Tom gives you the link for this so you don't have to hunt it down. A great routine to perform for that special occasion. Geometric Design: Method for modeling routines or used to structure routines. Tom gives examples using books, calculator, notepad and pen, and even takes you through the procedure. From Beyond: A fully scripted act. split into different sections, so you can perform one then move on to the next. This act deals with music. You need to get a few things like sharpie, billets, a box, pencil, pad, book, calculator, and a keyboard instrument. You can do a drawing duplication, name and place, and more. Well worth it if you ever wanted to mix your magic with music and give it some feeling. Worth the price for the knowledge shared and learned and experience you give your spectators. Tom then goes over some notes on Structuring. Atlantis: beautiful routine, second favorite from the book, everything is easy obtainable from office supply store or magic store. Deals with a memory transferred and an invisible touch. Has some good psychological ploys embedded as well, a la Banachek, etc..tom shows you how to make everything work and flow smoothly, even how to make the box. Beneath the Tells: a way to construct a gimmick with business cards, and involves a clever peek device. Vale of Stars V.2 Done with 2 people instead of 1 person. All in all, if you want to add real performance pieces to your work and don't mind a little construction, this is the book for you. Beautiful art pieces that will elevate your work, and get your head spinning. Congrats Tom Alex Alejandro

Wow, thanks Alex!
Glad you enjoyed the routines and other writings. It is my belief that to read someone's work is to take a peek into their mind, if not their heart as well. I'll restate this once more, as I did a few posts above: thank you to everyone who has purchased, reviewed, or has otherwise taken the time to read this work. This book and The Book of Light will no longer be available after tomorrow, the 5th (or whenever the hosting service gets their act together, so I can login and remove the "buy" button...). I would not recommend using Webs(dot)com for site hosting. Anyways, if you want to pick up the book, it's available here: http://www.wanderingmagic.com/books Tom Phoenix |

Ah darn, ya caught me!
At the time (back in January), I was working on a project which will tremendously advance the ART of magic, not necessarily the industry (caps for emphasis). I had anticipated that project taking up a ridiculous amount of my time. So trying to fill orders for books (which I was doing manually), work on the project, and fill orders for my videos was going to eat up too much time for the amount of return I was getting. So I had 2 choices, either: A) Stop selling my own magic, or B) Stop working on the project At the time, I chose (A): stop selling my own work, so I could dedicate more time to building something to benefit the community as a whole. There was a period of time where none of my work was available. But then, due to the grace of WordPress, I learned how to automate orders. Now, both my website and half of the project are on autopilot, which means I can afford the time to work on the other half of the project, without needing to worry about payment processing, order fulfillment, emails, etc. from book sales (since it is now automated). So does it look like a marketing ploy? You are right, it definitely does. Though please realize that "Today is the last day this will be available" was a shorthand way of saying "I'm not selling this anymore, because I have a project which will benefit the whole community that I need to work on, and I won't have time to deal with my own sales."
