I've been using Richard Osterlind's Breakthrough Card System for a few months now to great effect and anyone who hasn't taken a look at it yet really should as you can perform some amazing things with this tool.
My question, however, concerns what mentalism effects with cards to perform when I can't use the system either due to messing up the stack with a previous effect or because I'm borrowing a deck? What card effects, requiring no set-up, do you keep in reserve for situations like this that can contend with the strength of effects using a stacked deck? Thanks |

Take a look at Vernon's Out of Sight, Out of Mind. Extremely strong mentalism effect with cards. You can find it on one of the Ammar ETMCM tapes. I don't know if it's still readily available in print.

Vernon's Out of Sight, Out of Mind can be found in "Dai Vernon's Inner Card Triology". An updated variation was published in the December 2001 Genii. Jack is right, it is an amazing effect.

I'm pretty new to the BCS and was thinking about what I could do if the cards got out of order. One idea may be to carry an extra set of aces to load on the deck to do spectator cuts to aces. You could play this off as teaching them mentalism. Just an idea.

It depends on the situation. Mostly, I just go and do another trick.
However, if the person requested the routine saying "My friend saw this trick..." I would force a card on the person and then play up the theatre! |

Or do the impromptu version of Out of This World.

One effect that always goes down strongly is where the subject is asked to deal the cards one at a time face down onto the palm of your hand, stopping whenever he wishes. Of course, he stops on his own card...

Vernon's Out of Sight, Out of Mind is a good one. Also I love Lorayne's "Stop," even though it involves some dealing by spectator, but it always gets a great response.

If you're a hobbyist that performs primarily for friends and family, you will ruin them on stacked-deck effects... most other card effects pale in comparison, because they can't be nearly as direct and powerful.
Ted Annemann's "A Card To Be Thought About" is one pretty strong impromptu routine that I use when a BCS stack isn't available. - Jason Bay |

You could always keep an Invisible Deck handy. It really is the ultimate out. Have your spec randomly pick a card from the messed up stack and reveal it turned over in the ID.

- Jason Bay Hi Jason Which book is that in? TJ Take a look at Vernon's Out of Sight, Out of Mind. Extremely strong mentalism effect with cards. You can find it on one of the Ammar ETMCM tapes. Jack Shalom This is an amazing effect But so much concentrated work Counting, shuffling, pumping and dealing out I was trying to 'learn' this one but a well known magician advised: Forget it. They'll fall asleep before you finish Any comments on this view? Is the idea that the card was ONLY THOUGHT ABOUT so amazing to lay people? TJ |

A Symbologic-based routine is not 100 per cent impromtu, but only takes a fraction of a second to set up and can be done in secret.
That's always impressed people I've shown. You can use 10-to-Ace of hearts and 10-to-Ace of spades insted of the more traditional esp cards.

Three Card Surprise is an awesome preomonition effect requiring a complete deck (though if it's just under odds are still good).
This effect is strong, and can be found in the book World's Best Card Tricks by Bob Longe. Not much else in the book that I like to perform. I love the effect. And my spectators love the effect. |

Vernon's "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" is on ETMCM Volume 5.
A much stronger, cleaner version is Harvey Berg's "Intercept." Contact Harvey at bergmagic@yahoo.com L. Zaslow

Definately Out Of This World.
Three Card Monte....stop laughing, you can do it with a mentalist twist, just work on your psychological forcing and card switches. You can even let them play with you. I would highly recommend the Devil's picture book for this. Double think is great for this, as is everything else on the video.
