Just got the DVD yesterday. It is really enlightening. She uses a move that no other magician would use. Jeff McBride side he would not use it because it hurts the cards.
The DVD is a one technique with several ways of shooting the cards. If you want to see it work, I highly recommend this DVD for study. Juliana is Chinese and is from a Circus background in China. With only watching her peers she developed this act. Previously she was a juggler, acrobate artist. She was a road to success story with a lot of hard work. She came to Canada in only 6 years went to FISM and won. She fashions herself after Shamada. This is all on the DVD. The production of the DVD is excellent. Slow motion and extreme close ups. A real quality video. Oh! Juliana is very beautiful and lovely. |

I just ordered the DVD. I hope is worth it and more. I'll let you guys know when I receive it.
Another point, I remember first watching her act when she apeared in WGM 4. I did't know anything about manipulation, and her act looked like real magic to me. Cards just seemed to apear out of thin air at her fingertips. I recorded it and saw may times over, but never got a clue how she did it. It was great. You might think that the camera angles exposed what she was doing, but I never noticed it. Now days, I can see it miles away. It looks like such a bad angle, and I wonder how did I missed it. I guess if you don't know what to look for, you're not likely to find it. She and Peter Marvey ( another great manipulator) were the reason I got interested in Card manipulation. |

I found that Viking is selling the cards used in the video as Manipulation Cards-Chen. These yellow back cards are sleightly shorter then Juliana Chen's white back cards and she recommends these for the 2 and 3 card throwing move. The shorter cards make it easier to quickly separate the number of cards needed.
http://www.vikingmagiccompany.com/?nd=full&key=983 You will also need her wax for the cards if you desire to use this method of treating cards instead of fanning powder. http://www.vikingmagiccompany.com/?nd=full&key=1004 or here http://www.stevensmagic.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=6328 I cannot find her white back cards, sorry. |

I looked at the Stevens link for the “Special Formula Wax” and it looks like a bar of paraffin. Does anyone know what this stuff is where it can be found at our local Wally –World store? I doubt it is a proprietary wax formula only available to magic retailers. I searched in the Secret Session- Howdidits and did find anything.

Yes, you can use paraffin wax - Shimada does!!! For fanning cards, that is, I doub you would really want it on your 'manip' cards, though!

Asian performers use wax because the powder was never available in their countries. So they do use it on manipulation cards as well as for fanning. Kukuchi just used a candle that is available from any store. White of course, usually sold for when the power goes out. I would think canning wax should work from the grocery store as well.

I always has a problem with 'Grab-a-Dollar' production as the illustrations shown to use your second finger. Juliana Chen solved this incorrect finger placement and now I have no problem with the production. So I dug out my old 'Grab-a-Dollar' and it works perfectly.
So the DVD paid for itself, that information is priceless. |

Yes, this production is on the Sheridan video, though few ever remember. He desribes it briefly and then states that he doesn't like it. I think the production is excellent in the right hands, though I've never used it in performance myself. I doubt anyone but magicians notice.
I don't believe in reincarnation, but I may have in another life.
