My first trick, was not a magic trick. It was clean, underground, propless piece of mentalism. Grey elephant in Denmark.

Bob - I'm just glad it was enough to get you posting! Hope you're doing great.
The second card trick I learnt was Do As I Do, which is sold as coincidence. All I know is that the first two card tricks I learnt were mysterious more than magical. |

My first effect was a "Jumping Gems" routine performed with dots drawn on two matches at age 6.
But my second was Mentalism flavored: MUTUS NOMEN DEDIT COCIS. Funny that I can still remember the words 36 years later. |

I wonder if you were referring to somebody else or if this was a shot in the dark to everybody being vague, because I didn't notice a specific reference to this method in particular. Btw, is great to see you're back!

It's the most common method of doing this trick. Either that or a force, and most abject beginners wouldn't know how to effectively force a card.

Just seemed obvious to me. (A lot of real mind reading works that way)

Key card, f**ce (the cross cut in particular), p**k (the deck bend in particular), cr**p, control and even the 21 card trick comes to mind when I think of beginner's methods... so it wasn't all that obvious to me. I learned the very easy and lame versions of the above methods first when I was twelve. I'm not sure if I first learned the "bend p**k" or the "is that your card" trick, but I was thinking of the latter when I mentioned. I guess bold guesses can be quite a hit even with "wrong" assumptions... Or maybe Bob got so good reading minds that he just call it obvious now. lol

Sudo Nimh: Thanks for reminding me about MUTUS NOMEN DEDIT COCIS.
In an earlier post I mentioned the first magic book I received "Will Dexter's Illustrated Book of Magic Tricks. As soon as I saw the words it took me back 42 years as the effect is in the book. However, he offered a slightly simpler option that I also remember to this day DAVID LOVEL INYON ABBEY. Also remember learning at a very early age a way of producing smoke at my finger tips using the striking edge of a matchbox. Used that a lot to impress my 8 year old friends! Used to bite my nails as a kid so I can also confirm it tasted nasty! Wish I could remember which book it came from (can only recall that the instructions were given in step by step illustrations). |

@ mobius: Yeah, I did that bit with the smoke from fingers using the striker too.

Me too! Used to stink the house out, ruin my mothers spoons and leave me with fingers that stank worse than satans bits!

I guess this whole thread goes to show that mentalism has much less to do with plots or premises or tricks or effects, than it has to do with the framework of the performance and the credibility of the performer. Everybody knows that magicians do mind-reading and prediction tricks. This thread makes that very clear.
But most people probably haven't met a "real" mind-reader before. And that is a whole different thing altogether. So, while it is fascinating that many of our first tricks had mental plots -- just as it is fascinating that many of the first games children play have mental plots --it wouldn't be right to call it mentalism. |

Someone can teach you a method but you have to actually do it and learn with yourself how to present it as mentalism. However I do think it's curious that a lot of the first things I learned was indeed towards the mental plots.

So true (about method and presentation)...
In the 1978 movie Magic, Anthony Hopkins' character presents the simple magic trick "Do As I Do" as mind reading. Sorry for the poor quality, but you get the idea starting at 28:08 here:
