Could someone please give me a brief assessment of each of these 3 books by Derren Brown and what I can expect to read about or gain from each of them in your own opinion?
I'm really trying to get an idea of what each books content focuses on. So I can have a grasp on what to expect to read about, learn or absorb from each book. Pure Effect Tricks of the Mind Absolute Magic Up until recently, I didn't even know that some or all of these books were written for magicians and mentalist. Someone had told me a long time ago that they were books for laymen to read about Derren Brown. That he really doesn't tip methods, theory or thinking behind actually performing. So I assumed these were not books to learn about being a mentalist. Having said that. I don't know much about them. Which is why I am posting. I'm hoping someone here would be kind enough to give me a good overview of each so that I can figure out which would be the best to start with or which one I might feel is best for what I'm looking for, or more interested in reading. I've been doing a bit of googling but I'm not really getting the info I want to base a decision off of. I appreciate the help. Thank you! |

Pure Effect and Absolute Magic are both written for the magic world. They include several effects, and also his thoughts on performance and making magic magical. He has a very particular writing style, I will say.
I have not read all of Tricks of the Mind - there's not really any methods in there other than some memory stuff, and I think a chapter on hypnosis. It's more autobiographical. Then there's Confessions of a Conjuror which is just autobiographical, including some of his thoughts on what it's like to be a performer - I listened to this as an audio book, but only half of it fit on my MP3 player at the time and I never got around to listening to the last half. And just recently he published Happy, which is basically a book on his philosophy of happiness, which I have only just begun to read.

These books have been talked about to death here, so I suggest doing a basic search and you should find plenty of reading and reviews to your liking.

Yeah, WitchDocChris pretty much nailed it. I would only add that to the best of my recollection, pretty much all the effects he explains are more magic than mindreading.

Yes, for the most part. There's some psychological stuff in Pure Effect and Absolute Magic, as it was material he was working with as he transitioned to being a psychological illusionist.

Thanks Chris. I'll start with those two.
I'll have to do a bit more research of how pure effect and absolute magic differ from one another. I'd like to figure out what each is about to decide which to find a read first. I'm about to hit the search bar. But if you can answer that directly and save me some digging. Feel free. But at least I know what to start with now. Thanks. Cheers! |

This post inspired me to reread Absolute Magic this morning when I have down time at work. I made it through about 60 pages. So far, it's more focused on the performer's philosophical approach to magic.
I think there are about a billion reviews out there, though. Derren Brown is the big name in mentalism, so reviews of his work are legion. |

I recall Absolute Magic being more philosophical as well. I generally read them one after the other so I forget what specifically is in each.
