I also posted this in the Card Section. I had primarily done just cards when I got started into magic as a hobby. I still absolutely love cards but I also want to broaden my horizons and have started learning some coin magic and I really like it also. Was hoping to get some opinions from some coin guys here as well as card guys on the other post.
So my wife is going to buy me one of these books as a present and I get to choose which. I was hoping for some of your thoughts on which one to get. I want both and may eventually end up getting the other at a much later date so I'm not writing off the one that is not chosen but I may need to wait a long time to acquire it. I'm a hobbyist, I consider myself an intermediate card guy but love cards and always enjoy learning something new, and a beginner with coins but would love to grow in that avenue. Some of the things I own already are Apocalypse vol. 1, Strong Magic and Designing Miracles by Ortiz, Expert Card Technique, RRTCM, Card Control by Buckley, Card College 1-5, Paperback Modern Coin Magic, The Amateurs Magician's Handbook, Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic, Art of Astonishment 1-3, I also own In the Beginning There Were Coins dvd and Jay Sankey Revolutionary Coin Magic DVD. What I think are pros for The Collected Almanac. It's big, so I will get a lot of bang for my buck. It has many contributors so there is a variety not just of tricks but thoughts and opinions on how things are done. The cons that I worry about are, that the book is so big that it will be less accessible. Meaning I'll get overwhelmed by going through trick after trick and perhaps finding it hard to find things I like just because there is so much. Pros for Impossibilia are I think the book may be more accessible due to size (like definitely less intimidating to get through it all). I don't know if this is a con or pro but one of the other reasons I consider getting over the Collected Almanac is because I am worried copies will start to get scarce and I won't be able to find a physical copy at a later date (I think it will be easier to find the Collected Almanac later). Another pro or con depending on how I like the book is, since its all pretty much Bannon if I like the stuff I may love all of it, with the inverse also being true. Anyway, just wondering if you guys had any advice on which I should get, I don't feel like I can go wrong either way but also appreciate advice.

Hiya terry, welcome here...
I think you're right, you can't go wrong as both are worthwhile pursuits. Also, you got some good stuff already, I see. As to your interest in coin magic...I would only suggest that you check out Richard Kaufman's many written works, they are excellent. His, "David Roth's Expert Coin Magic" is a treatise in the genre, works of a real living master. Also, a wonderful book set from Joshua Jay, "The Definitive Jay Sankey" is chock full of all sorts of wonderful magic and thinking from a tremendously gifted mind and master closeup magician. Other such good books I would recommend are from the magical minds of Dr. Larry Barnowsky, Al Schneider and David Neighbors. Good luck on your journey my friend.

Thank you MB! I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts on the Café here. My wife has already purchased Al Schneider magic for me and I'm super excited about that (not sure how much more coin work is in his coin book for this one but excited for the coin stuff that is in there). Expert Coin Magic and The Definitive Sankey are definitely on my want to get lists. Currently, I buy things when on sale or for a good used price because that little thing of not being able to pull coins out of thin air, or at least not really. The price of the Definitive Sankey and Expert Coin Magic has kept me from getting them thus far but I do hope to aquire them and with what you said Expert Coin Magic will move up on my priority list. Really appreciate your response.

NP, happy to be of some help here. And thanks for the kind words.
The big boys are great to read of, but don't miss the other hidden gems out there too. Do check into Dr. Larry Barnowsky's work. He's a real magical thinker and remarkably smart guy. He's done a book on coins, but several others that show a variety of smart closeup magic, even some magically mathematical work (Oh, besides being an MD, he's also a fine mathematician --guess that would make him a "Mathemagician" or something like that). He's written several well-illustrated books on magic, that are deeply thought out and explained. A very interesting man indeed. www.barnowskymagic.com

I would suggest, if you haven't already, check through the contents of each book on
http://magicref.tripod.com/books.htm And see what interests you more. (Both of those books are included.) Another aspect of a book is its "look". The collected almanac's fonts are mono-spaced, and hence a bit ugly, but Kaufman's diagrams are the industry standard (to me) John

MB thanks for the links, I just read both articles and watched the video. I already knew some about both Apollo and Cohen but the articles were great and I feel like I know so much more about them as well. Also, had never seen a picture of Cohen before and didn't realize how young he was. The video was pretty great, really enjoyed it all.
David Neighbors thank you for spending the time to make a post here, I hear great things about you and I'm sure will own one of your books soon! John Long thank you for sharing that link. I just read through the contents and definitely am feeling more confident in what I will choose.

I have all of Larry's books, as well as David Roths and David neighbors book. There is enough material in them to last a lifetime. What you will need to add is coins and then matching gaffes. When I say coins, I mean walking liberty, franklins, peace dollars, etc. getting a bunch of each is not cheap. Go to a coin convention and get them. As far as video lesions, the series called New York coin symposium ( 16 DVDs) will allow you to see a variety of moves, routines and gaffes coins.
Hope this helps. |

Collected Almanac has stuff from so many different people, you can't go wrong. You may find a bunch of things you would use or discover someone's work you'd like to pursue further. No to push aside the great work of John Bannon, but I'd go with CA.
