Hello all!
First off, I'm happy to be back posting! I post pretty sporadically because of school demands and therefore don't get to perform as much magic as I would like to. Last night, I auditioned for my college's "got talent" style show and I've attached a video of the performance because I very much respect the opinions on here and I'm looking forward to hearing as much feedback as possible. I'm a very shy person by nature, and while I've been practicing magic for almost two and a half years now, this is the first time I've ever performed in front of lay people other than family and close friends! With that in mind, I thought it went fairly well, however there were some clunky moves that I wish I could re-do and sometimes I thought the script could have been a little more fluid. I guess that's why you learn the most from actually getting out and doing something! Finally, to give credit where credit is due, the first trick is Kolossal Killer by Kenton Knepper, followed by a brief, three phase ambitious card that is based off of moves I saw on a Tommy Wonder DVD, and the closer is Jeff Kaylor's "unbelievalope" with his UCCU. There were three judges, and the video doesn't show this well, so I'll explain that when I reach into my pocket to pull out "your card", it's a blank card that has "your card" written on it. It's a silly gag that I added to take the heat off of my hands, maybe it wasn't warranted but I didn't feel fully comfortable in that moment doing the move without something else going on. Sorry for the long post and I'm looking forward to hearing feedback! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IQO0uc8BwI |

I'm not a card guy, but I thought this was a good performance given your description above of your personality and your experience performing. The panel clearly enjoyed it. My only outright criticism was that you should have milked that 6 of Diamonds coincidence a little bit more.
One way of overcoming a naturally shy attitude is to speak a little bit louder than you feel is normal. While I thought your scripting was good, and you didn't seem overly nervous delivering it, speaking loudly and enunciating clearly always helps one to exude a little more confidence. You also seem to make pretty good eye contact, which is always a good thing. The more eye contact you make, the more you radiate confidence and that helps a lot with misdirection. |

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I agree that I should have milked that 6, and when I think back on it, it was a free selection, but I keep coming up with ways I could have made that more of a moment in and of itself.
It's a good point to speak a little louder, I was focusing on speaking slowly because I was nervous, however I didn't realize that speaking louder was something I could employ as well, and I'll keep that in mind going forward! Thanks again for your input, Chris |
