Hello! I am building a new original illusion!
Without giving away too much, part of the effect involves a spectator "sending" a word by finding and concentrating on each letter, one at at a time, on a pre-printed list/card/coin/something. The letters are divided into two banks. When a spectator is concentrating on a letter, I need to know which bank they are looking at. Currently, I am using an "ESP Testing card" with contrasting colors on each side so I can tell which side of the card they are looking at. I'm am trying to brainstorm other ways of indicating the list via gaze or physical action, using a small, preferably normal looking prop. For instance, another idea I've played with is a little book, with the lists on opposite pages, so the list is indicated by the person's gaze direction. The problem is, the smaller the book is, the harder it is to tell the gaze direction, and I'd like to be able to carry it in a pocket. If anyone knows of any clever ways of getting this kind of information, I would greatly appreciate a nod in the correct direction. Thanks! |

Wow! You are putting a lot of faith in being able to detect what someone is looking at. Not a criticism.. just a reaction. I've never heard of this before so maybe it is an established art of which I am ignorant. Wouldn't be the first time.
How about something like an "old fashioned" folding map. It could have something immaterial in the center and a list on each side. You could unfold it and it could be as wide as your arms reach. How about a stack of marked back cards with blank faces on which you put the letters. You could have them in a prearranged sequence and have them cycle through each card... moving it from front to back as they hold it up to gaze at it. You could read the back card (which would face you) and knowing the order you would know which card they are looking at. You could have dummy cards in the stack with none of the expected letters. If you don't want them to get out of order you could make kind of a spiral bound flip-over book to hold the cards. In fact if you chose your words carefully the whole trick could be done this way with only one used letter on each card. |

I'm going to suggest you do something else entirely. Instead of giving them a totally open choice of words, use a force. I suggest Thought Association Card. You need to be able to switch between just a couple of options, depending on which way you go, but you have the apparent freedom of thousands of possible words.
I agree with TheRaven, you are putting a lot of faith in your ability to eye read. If you want some clever ways to get information, read the classics of mentalism. 13 Steps has some great stuff for you to work with. It may feel a little dated as you read it, but the information is timeless. -Patrick |
