I'm a huge fan of the School for Scoundrels antique brass shells. I tried a really cheap set first - basically a toy- which was a false economy. Also the SFS Introduction to the shell game download. Pop's 3 shells at the magic castle my favourite performance since starting in magic last year. Take a look above.

It is very specific in the initial instructions that you should practice the "Moves / routine" EXACTLY and make no changes as you learn the shell game. Later (months down the road when you have it down pat and can do it in your sleep ) You can then go about "making the routine your own". I find the Boot Camp to be a great way to learn most all the moves thru repetition while developing muscle memory. You also learn using "smaller" bottle caps which makes using the "larger" shells later - less difficult. Pop has excellent resources on advanced routines, trade show ideas and is what I consider a "Master Historian" on Swindles like 3 card monte, fast and loose, and 3 shells. He also makes excellent shell / pea sets (I own and use his "Street Shells as well as the included caps from the Boot Camp DVD set). Phil Cass however has possibly the best presentation for the shells (as a magic demonstration) I have ever seen. His audience management (as it relates to them mentally and emotionally is an incredible thing of beauty). If you are looking for unique sets, look no further than http://www.3shells.com/ (Which I think shellgame-al is affiliated with - or owns, his sig is how I found the site a couple years back). I do not "Own" a set from there but will one day for sure.

The way I see ir, for who knows how long, the shell game was done with real walnut shells. Everyone from con men to magicians made their own, and they worked just fine. I don't think that there is any practical difference between using a manufactured set and a homemade set when it comes to moving the pea around, unless you prefer sometime built in gimmicks. Peas .... now that's a different story.
A bag of walnuts and some putty costs bubkus. If your on a limited budget, I would spend that money on what you need to educate yourself, and some good peas. |
