WARNING: If you watch "Bates Motel" and have not seen the latest episode entitled "Marion" READ NO FURTHER. Major spoiler ahead.
Being a big "Psycho" fan, I have watched the hit TV series "Bates Motel" from it's inception. The writers have done a good job showing us Norman's journey towards insanity and I can understand tweeking a story with additional characters and story lines to turn a one hour and 49 minute movie into a 5 season TV series. With that being said, there are "iconic" moments that should be left untouched in any retelling of a classic story. The shower scene in "Psycho" is one such moment. What the writers did with that classic scene, in the latest episode, felt like a "sucker" trick, leading us all the way to that epic moment, that we have waited 5 years to see, and finding only a false climax. (all Marion got was a shower) The addition of a second shower scene (with a different character) ,to me, took this series from the retelling of a classic into the "reinvention" of one. In my mind "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and Psycho was certainly not broke. |
