I am an aspiring card magician, fairly new to the art with about 3 months experience. I'm homeschooled, so I have a lot of time to practice my sleights, but I was wondering if the quality of my cards could be affecting my performances with my quality cards.
I have a big stack of Bicycle cards (around two decks, probably not complete) which are really old, about 2 years. I found them in a drawer while fishing around in my room. I use them for practicing and they work pretty well, spreading ok and giving me good double lifts, but I don't know if I should get a brand new deck. I mean, these work fine. I'm just worried that they are affecting my sleights when it comes to performing with my GOOD cards. Is it really necessary to buy a new deck? |

Old cards are better for some sleights, new cards are better for others. Personally, I think DLs are much easier with an old, well worn deck, but that could just be because of the particular DL I do. I do a different kind of DL, where I lift from the back of the pack instead of the turnover from the side, which is the same one Harry Lorayne and Pop Haydn do, and which I think looks more natural. OTOH, card fans are easier for me with a new, high quality deck. So it just depends on what sleights you're working on.

I think you should practice with whatever you think you'll perform with.
You should probably get a new deck soon and practice with those too. For a couple reasons: for one thing, a lot of slights work better with newer, slicker cards. Second, at some point your current cards will just wear out and you don't want to be dependent on having a super old pack around to do magic. You should be comfortable with whatever you pick up, so you should practice with cards in different conditions. The easy way to do this is pick up a deck and break it in by practice. Over time it'll degrade and get softer as it wears in (and eventually wears out), then get a new deck, etc. |

Thank you all for your support! I believe I will buy a new practice deck, but not abandon my current one completely
