I am curious, what is the most fun casual effect you do? I'm talking about something when you are amongst friends and you want to do something that is a bit of magic, but really more about social fun than it is magic. Maybe something that would be good in a social situation with a bunch of people hanging out having a few drinks. Maybe something that involves several people.
I'll get it started: One thing I like to do is "The Pennies" by Giovanni Livera. I realize this is not new to him. I have been doing this long before his DVD came out, and I can't recall where I learned it (I think from a "fun with math" book), but it is an easy reference for people to recognize. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S16200 I also do a murder mystery that is similar to the "Clue" game, but with an IMP device. I generally use Psypher, but I think I am going to use Neil's fantastic method called "Penetration". NeilS is a Café member and you can get his method and routines for a very reasonable cost. BTW, I don't personally know Neil and I'm not pushing his stuff. He just happens to be a Café member with a really cool method. KJ |

Decade ago such demonstrations were in every magic books as puzzles. Matchsticks, coins, etc. can get people involved in a fun away that can lead to magic.
I never considered these to be magic and wondered why they were included. I guess, just being "mildly impossible" is enough. You might check some of these out. Today, folks will find a demonstration of a slide-rule to be magic.

Turning an imaginary object into a real one that they can feel is often my go-to routine, followed by my energy transfer routine.

I would say that “Slydini Kills Time” is probably one of my favorites.
I would ask a dinner companion to take his watch off his wrist and rebuckle it and give it to me. I would then smash the watch on the table and, of course, there is that horrible noise. I would then say, “The key to this is-----“ and when I lift my hand, instead of a crushed watch is - my keys. I stand and reach into my pocket and produce the watch - which I return to my dinner companion, hoping I didn’t ruin his meal. This appears in the third issue of Apocalypse – page 25 March 1978 |

I have had fun using "Andante," which is a mind-reading or lie detection trick available on Penguin. I always do it with five people participating. If there are more people present, they can just watch. The five participants designate one of their number as "The Vampire". The other four are non-Vampires. Each participant chooses to be a liar or truth teller. At the beginning, I don't know who is the vampire, who is a liar or who is a truth teller. I ask a series of questions, and claim that I can tell by watching their reactions whether they are truth tellers or liars. I begin by asking each of the five participants whether he or she is the Vampire. Then I ask two or at most three participants a single additional question. Following that, I identify which participants are truth-tellers, which are liars, and finally I reveal the vampire. This trick is based on logic, but most observers think I really can detect from their behavior whether they are lying. It's not quite magic, but it comes close and people really enjoy it. Occasionally people guess that there is logic involved -- but these people seem to enjoy the trick at least as much as people who think I'm a human lie detector. I do this trick impromptu with friends, but have also included it in Halloween shows. For the Halloween shows, I give the participants five Sunburst candies, one for each participant. One candy is red, the rest are other colors. I tell them that the Vampire should hold the red candy in front of himself/herself in an extended fist, and the other participants should hold their candies in the same way. At the end of the trick, I have the participants open their fists -- first the truth tellers, then the liars, finally the Vampire. When the Vampire opens their fist, I say that I have caught the vampire and must drive a stake through his heart -- and I skewer the red Sunburst candy with a toothpick. One tip: The liars can get mixed up. To avoid this, I first tell them I am going to ask them a question, I warn them that it may take a moment to find the right answer. I then tell them the question I am going to ask, and then I tell them to stop and think of their answer. Finally, after they agree they are ready, I sk them to give their answer. This procedure does not slow down the performance much at all, and I have found that if participants are given a chance to think of their answers first, without being under pressure, they are much less likely to make a mistake when answering.

On such special occasions, I enjoy pulling a small envelope from my wallet and pulling out 3 invisible coins...This is Ultimate Positive Negative by John Cesta.
It's a wonderful little effect that is both engaging, easy to do, and quite impossibly amazing. I pull it out every now-&-again when you want a little something-something that so casually leaves a BIG impression.

Something silly I do, but gets very good reactions from kids, is that marker that lets you draw a mustache right on someones face (or your own face - but I usually draw it right on a kids face)and then it disappears right away. I thought it would just be a fun gag and people would figure out how I did it, but not something people would be amazed by. But actually, a lot of people have no idea how I did it, and everyone has a lot of fun, and then a bunch of kids want me to draw a mustache on them. If you repeat it they figure it out, so just do it once unless you don't care if they know how you did it.

I do recapped a lot. Kids go nuts. After they see the pen behind my ear, then the cap in my ear, I finish with pulling the cap from their ear. Kids just love having something pulled from their ear........

I use the Social Prediction to predict funny stuff that just happened, like "Lily will start laughing while eating" or "James will drink 3 bottles of beer"
