Magic Magazine once put out a mental epic routine involving the use of music in the effect for a couple of laugh lines. However, the effect seemed to allow for the spectator to choose three different things to be placed in the 3 boxes on the mental epic board...seemingly without having to force the last choice. Is there a method out there that allows this, or does something need to be forced at the end?

It's not essential to force the last item. Eddie Burke put out a routine in the 80's I think (doubtless not the first) in which the spectators wrote down their thoughts and the first item was peeked. If you really don't like the idea of forcing the last item then check out Stephen Minch's book "Mind Melds" - it contains probably the best version of this effect in print.
