A presentation of apparently impromptu magic can require practiced sleights/moves applicable to many 'found' objects,
or practiced effects waiting or right moment that is apparently "prompted by the moment." I got a chance of both Saturday Night. Several couples were over for dinner and everyone decided to say and watch the SNL Spicer spoof -- past my usual bedtime, but I didn't get a vote. The men plus Cindy wound up in the lower family room for poker. The wives plus Cindy's husband Elizabeth headed for the deck to play a game of "who made the stupidest mistake this week.," or something. I didn't fit in with either bunch. Not that I mind poker, but not with wild cards and arguments over favorite TV shows or sports hero antics. The women were complaining that we couldn't toast marshmallows because the rain had soaked the firewood I had set up for the event. I headed downstairs. "Ken doesn't play poker since he is a magician and doesn't play fair." I took that as a challenge. Steve had neat piles of chips in front of him while Cindy had a piled mess in front of her. Says I, 'The object isn't to hold good cards bit to trade a penny chip for something bigger." I plucked a white chip from Steve's stack in my left hand and a red chip from Cindy's. Keeping my fists apart, I wiggled my thumbs -- the opened to reveal the red in my left hand and white in my right. Steve grabbed it up as a gift. "It seems Cindy is not happy with this bit of bad luck, so, I can use magic to help." I picker up her white chip, squeezed it, and tossed a blue chip onto her pile. I offer, "Now, everyone is five cents richer." Bob, across the table exclaimed, "Too bad it isn't real money." I replied, "Chips have an imaginary value set by everyone here -- so imaginary things can happen. Money has an imaginary value dictated by somebody else, so I am helpless." Back upstairs no one is watching as I switch the fire-pit wood for another prepared stack. I join that group. "Emmy was saying you were doing some magic for the guys downstairs. Does it help with poker? "No," I replied, "But it does help with intuition and predicting emotional behavior. Maybe I can demonstrate." From a drawer I removed a deck of cards set up for "Far Sight" several months earlier. Nice effect put not suitable for every setting. After the demonstration of correctly named the chosen card from across the room, I announced that Emmy (my blind wife) was the only one with real magic. I handed her some matches and told her to light the fire. Elizabeth guided her to the pit and pile of kindling and wood. Emmie trusts me and can see a little bit up close. She found the paper underneath and lit it. I got the marshmallows.
