Hi,

I'm trying to find out more about the origin of the venerable age prediction cards mathematical trick. I haven't even got a place to start. Help?

This is a binary sorting system, and was first applied to conjuring (at least in English literature) in the book “Recreations with Mathematics” by Charles Hutton in 1801. In 1749, however, Benjamin Franklin and David Hall produced a set of “quotation cards” using said principle (thanks to Tom Ransom and Michael Weber's research on this topic).

Sincerely,
Dale
