KAHNCEPTUAL CARD MAGIC: More Deceptive Practices With Playing Cards is a NEW 140 page photo-illustrated book featuring ten extraordinary card effects for magicians with intermediate to advanced card handling skills. All of the routines in this book are practical, real world performance pieces. Eighty-two photos accompany the text to highlight all of the intricate handling details.
https://kahnjuring.com/kahnceptual-card-magic IN-THE-HANDS OPEN PREDICTION (IHOP) A two deck solution to Paul Curry’s classic Open Prediction Problem with an unexpected ending that the audience will never see coming. An inexplicable miracle! PREDICTED CARD AT THOUGHT OF NUMBER A fun and easy-to-do prediction. The magician is somehow able to foresee which playing card a spectator will shuffle to a secretly thought of number. NAME, RANK AND SERIAL NUMBER Eight random cards are removed from a deck. After a series of thorough shuffles by both the magician and the audience, the order of the cards miraculously matches the serial number on a bill that was laying on the table the entire time. YOU DID DO-IT-YOURSELF A classic of magic with a twist! A spectator locates his freely chosen card by stabbing an indifferent card into the deck while the cards are held behind his back. The selection then proves to be the only odd backed card in the entire deck. No forces! THE QUEEN'S LIE DETECTOR Martin Gardner’s classic Lie Speller plot revisited with a brilliant kicker prediction. Incorporates ideas of J.K. Hartman, Marty Kane and Jim Steinmeyer. THE JOKE'S ON YOU (REDUX) An extremely visual card transposition meets Brother John Hamman’s Mystery Card plot. TRIPLE WHAMMY In a uncanny display of skill, the magician instantly cuts to the mates of three free spectator selections in a truly shuffled deck. A TRIBUTE TO HENRY A.W. NOMIS The classic Stop Trick revisited. A spectator shuffles a red deck and a card of their choice is placed sight unseen into the card box. A blue deck is then introduced and a second spectator stops on a random card as they are turned face up. Both selections match! At no time does the performer look at the faces of the cards. (TO THE FOURTH POWER)4 As a deck is dealt face up, four mystery cards are left face down in the pack at the spectator’s direction. These four selections ultimately match the magician’s prediction. Is it a quadruple coincidence or is it fate? The climax will answer that question definitively. ZIPPED UP & LOCKED AWAY A card is freely selected, signed and lost in the deck. The cards are dribbled onto a sealed zipper-style storage bag where the signed selection defies the laws of physics ending up INSIDE the sealed bag. Solid through solid. This is the original! WHAT MAGICIANS ARE SAYING ABOUT KAHNCEPTUAL CARD MAGIC AND SCOTT KAHN: “Scott is one of my favorite session mates. As a result, I’ve been able to see these ideas develop and grow into their current form. They started off strong and kept getting better and better. This book is a treat for card workers looking for practical, powerful magic.” - Caleb Wiles “Powerful, take no prisoners card magic. If this were 1692, Scott would surely be on trial for witchcraft.” - Michael Kaminskas “Kahn's approach to magic is similar to that of his medical career, prescribing solutions that breathe new life into classic card magic.” - John Guastaferro “Your In-The-Hands Open Prediction is a wonderful way of turning the plot upside down. I was severely fooled! In fact, I wish I had seen all of the routines in this book first before reading them to experience being totally fooled!” - Tomas Blomberg “Scott Kahn is a must study for those into card magic. He tackles a wide range of plots with a unique approach.” - Ryan Schlutz

Another glowing testimonial from Penguin Magic's Brent Braun:
"I finally got a chance to sit down and read Scott Kahn's book "Kahnceptual Card Magic" and WOW. It is well written, an easy read and full of great card ideas that are simple, off beat, and fun. You should really pick up a copy. I think you will enjoy it. Also the first trick in the book is well worth the price of admission."

Praise from England's John Carey:
“Earlier this week I received Kahnceptual Card Magic from Scott Kahn. Firstly, I must say it looks to be a beautiful book and the cover design and photos inside are excellent! When I dipped inside the contents to study, I wasn't disappointed. Every single item is beautifully constructed and will fool people badly! If I had only received the two deck open prediction, I would have had my money's worth. It is simply brilliant and that's just one of the gems in here. Well done Scott on a first class volume that card magicians everywhere should own!!!”

I received a review copy of Kahnceptual Card Magic. This was my first introduction to Scott Kahn’s work. What follows below is my unbiased review:
In-The-Hands Open Prediction (IHOP): “A two deck solution to Paul Curry’s classic Open Prediction Problem with an unexpected ending that the audience will never see coming. An inexplicable miracle!” – Scott’s description of the effect. This is a fantastic opening to a book. This uses a couple of very common gimmicked cards and two decks of cards, but it creates one of the absolute cleanest open prediction effects I’ve ever seen. After reading the routine and playing with it with cards in hand, I had a few handling changes I made to suit me. I sent those to Scott and he loved them and I believe he will be including those changes in future copies of the book (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, Scott.) My handling suggestion changes the presentation slightly. I also suggested a presentational angle I would take. Essentially, the effect becomes a demonstration of the different between intuition and clairvoyance. Intuition is trusting your gut, while clairvoyance is predicting the future. I have the spectator try their hand at intuition. They succeed. I then show them what clairvoyance is and show that I had predicted all of the choices they made. Again, I think this routine is so very successful. It’s simple, but it has some very nice convincers which would fool any laymen who saw it (and most magicians too.) It passed the girlfriend test with flying colors, and that says a lot because my girlfriend has seen my magic for 4 years now and knows the ins and outs of many of my routines. To fool her is akin to fooling a newer magician. She thought she had me figured out at one point, but the convincers that Scott has threw her completely off track. You can tell Scott has worked this routine like crazy. I’ll be adding it to my repertoire. Predicted Card at Thought of Number: “A fun and easy-to-do prediction. The magician is somehow able to foresee which playing card a spectator will shuffle to a secretly thought of number.” – Scott’s description of the effect. This is another killer routine. This one also passed the girlfriend test with flying colors. So much so, that I performed it two or three times and every time, she got more and more amazed because she couldn’t figure out the method (even though she was familiar with many of the aspects of the routine, she was still fooled by how they were layered together.) This is so very very simple, but please don’t over look this powerful routine because of its simplicity! It’s quick, it packs a punch, and it seems truly impossible. This is another I’ll be adding to my repertoire. Name, Rank And Serial Number: “Eight random cards are removed from a deck. After a series of shuffles by both the magician and the audience, the order of the cards miraculously matches the serial number on a bill that was laying on the table the entire time.” – Scott’s description of the effect. This routine starts off with a very off-putting force of the 8 cards. This force is what makes the routine work so well in my opinion. There are a few parts that don’t make a ton of sense logically, but I imagine the spectators will over look those flaws (namely, you have them deal 4 piles of cards and then have them take the top and bottom card of each to get the 8 cards you use for the trick.) I imagine you can hide that pretty efficiently with some stammering about making the selections truly random. In the end, it really does feel impossible for the cards to match the serial number and yet, they do. The hardest part of this routine is finding a bill with a serial number that works! Haha, you have to find one with no zeros and with as many different numbers as you can (as in as few repeats as possible.) While reading I actually had a thought of how to appear to mix the cards even more, but when I got to the end of the section Scott actually said he used to do that but felt it added too much length to the routine. This just goes to show how worked these routines are. He’s already tried the options and found the one that works best. I admire that. You DID Do-It-Yourself: “A classic of magic with a twist! A spectator locates his freely chosen card by stabbing an indifferent card into the deck while the cards are held behind his back. The selection then proves to be the only odd backed card in the entire deck. No forces!” – Scott’s description of the effect. Again, this one is such a simple idea. It’s Scott’s take on a classic routine. In the original routine, there is a chance the reveal could actually be off slightly which looks like a miss. Scott wanted to have an out in case that ever happen, thus, this routine was created so that there is never a miss. This is another case of Scott’s good thinking and how he elevates something further. Most would be satisfied with the original version, but Scott takes it up a notch to prevent there ever appearing to be a failure. I find this to actually be one of the hardest effects to perform for two reasons: #1. You have to do quite a bit of work one-handed behind your back. This work is a bit difficult for me to do smoothly with one hand. I feel very clunky. #2. You have to hold half the deck behind your back for no real reason. Now Scott gives a reason for holding half of the deck behind your back, but in my opinions, it is a weak out and I honestly believe laymen would feel something very suspicious was going on at that moment. They wouldn’t know WHAT. But they would feel something was off. For that reason, I won’t be performing this. I also feel it is a bit lack-luster—especially compared to the other effects in the book. The Queen’s Lie Detector: “Martin Gardner’s classic Lie Speller plot revisited with a brilliant kicker prediction. Incorporates ideas of J.K. Hartman, Marty Kane and Jim Steinmeyer.” – Scott’s description of the effect. This is another really good routine. It can be set up on the fly from a borrowed deck and leaves the spectator with the feeling that any thought of card is predicted long in advance as well as the lie-detector being able to find their selection. This too passed the girlfriend test. After performing it for her she was very shocked at the prediction. She immediately said, “Okay… where are the other outs?” She refused to believe me when I insisted there were no other outs. This goes to show how convincing the thought-of-card part of the routine is. If you perform it correctly, they will truly feel the selection was thought of and could have been any card in their hand. They will misremember the effect making it impossible to backtrack. I will be using this one as well. It’s simple to do, and very effective. The Jokes On You (Redux): “An extremely visual card transposition meets Brother John Hamman’s Mystery Card plot.” – Scott’s description of the effect. I’m not a huge fan of this routine. It is a strange combination of the mystery card plot with a card change. To me, these two effects don’t actually fit together very well, but perhaps it just doesn’t fit my performance style. I won’t be doing this as I think there are better methods for the mystery card plot out there—those which don’t include the first effect which I feel is very out of place. To me, the first effect feels like it’s there only because it’s necessary to the method of the second effect (which is true.) But again, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! Someone out there may be the perfect fit for this short little routine. Triple Whammy: “In an uncanny display of skill, the magician instantly cuts to the mates of three free spectator selections in a truly shuffled deck.” – Scott’s description of the effect. This routine is very easy to do, but it does require a full-deck stack. This stack allows three spectators to fairly select a card each with no forces and then you can find their mates very quickly by cutting to three exact cards—the mates. I’m not a huge fan of this one. To me, the set up isn’t worth the payout of the effect. The effect from the audience’s perspective is a bit lacking in my opinion. Essentially, it’s a lot of work for a climax which to me feels nothing greater than, “Oh, that as neat.” However, it’s a great method to have control over the mates of as many selections as you want though! I think that is where the true value of this comes in. I wouldn’t use the routine presented, but if you wanted to do a routine where you secretly have control over the mates and then produce them in another way (as in cutting to the aces style,) then this would be great. As a matter of fact, I like that idea a lot. So you would have four people choose a card. You then have those four people cut the deck into four piles. When each person looks at the top card of the pile they cut, they see the mate to their selection. Now THAT’S a good trick and one that I could see myself using! Okay I didn’t like this, but I just changed my own mind. I like it. I’ll have to try that routine out. A Tribute To Henry A.W. Nomis: “The classic Stop Trick revisited. A spectator shuffles a red deck and a card of their choice is placed sight unseen into the card box. A blue deck is then introduced and a second spectator stops on a random card as they are turned face up. Both selections match! At no time does the performer look at the faces of the cards.” – Scott’s description of the effect This is a very deceptively layered effect. A layman would be fooled 100% be this with no plausible explanation. Most magicians would be incredibly fooled as well. It combines an Asi Wind sleight with a special deck, a memorized deck, and a special force. All of these combine in a way that leaves the effect looking truly impossible. I’m not the BIGGEST fan of the force used, but I’m sure if Scott suggests it, he has used it extensively. I would probably opt for a different force of some kind, but other than that, this routine is about as perfect as it gets. It definitely isn’t as easy as some of the other effects in the book. It will take some work, but the effect is worth it. (To The Fourth Power)^4: “As a deck is dealt face up, four mystery cards are left face down in the pack at the spectator’s direction. These four selections ultimately match the magician’s prediction. Is it a quadruple coincidence or is it fate? The climax will answer that question definitively.” – Scott’s description of the effect. This effect uses some gimmicked cards, but man oh man, the effect is worth it. This is essentially an open prediction effect done with 4 cards instead of one. It is a GREAT method. It may seem like a long way to go for an effect as it requires special gimmicked cards that aren’t common, but the cleanliness of the final effect is certainly worth the effort of making or printing the special cards. As Scott says, this routine will fool anyone who sees it. It really is THAT deceptive and THAT clean. This is a fantastic piece of work. Scott says it has been several years in the making and I believe him. All of the pieces of the puzzle fit together nicely in this routine. Zipped Up and Locked Away: “A card is freely selected, signed and lost in the deck. The cards are dribbled onto a sealed zipper-style storage bag where the signed selection defies the laws of physics ending up INSIDE the sealed bag. Solid through solid. This is the original!” – Scott’s description of the effect. If it sounds familiar, it is! This is the routine that inspired Indecent by Wayne Houchin. I think Scott only put it in the book for completeness and so that his method will be left in print somewhere over the years for future historical findings. While the effect is strong, I do believe Wayne Houchin made a significant improvement to Scott’s routine namely, making it impromptu. Scott’s method requires some work be done to the baggie before performing. While it was nice to get to see the original and read about it, I wouldn’t trade out Indecent for this. (Speaking of indecent, sheesh, I used to do that ALL the time. I may have to bring it back out for fun after reading this.) That concludes the contents of the book! Overall, the book is very nicely produced with color photos right when you need them to help clarify, and very well written explanations. Scott does a great job of teaching the effects without being redundant or leaving anything out. I think this is a very good book of strong, hard hitting card magic that all magicians should have on their bookshelf. It has some really powerful effects within the covers. The only bad thing about many of his effects is that a lot of them require two decks of cards which are set up. This means some of this won’t be all that suitable for table-hopping since you’re usually fighting for pocket space, but if that’s not an issue to you, there are some real laymen and magician foolers in this book. For the price, you can’t go wrong. It’s available from Scott’s website here: https://kahnjuring.com/kahnceptual-card-magic/ I’ll be here to answer any questions you guys may have about this! I really enjoyed his Predicted Card At Any Number, decided to take a look and noticed that this book is only $30? Sounds like quite a deal considering that most of the material sounds very good.
Like many mentalists, I have an ambiguous relationship with card effects. I love them, but I don't ever want more than 2 or maybe 3 card effects in my act. I have those 3 (and a few alternates) and new material would need to pretty amazing to make me actually perform them (other than casually with friends or family). Nonetheless, I ordered this and I look forward to reading it! Most of these effects look like they have a mental element, so who knows?

Just wanted to chime in after having read through the book over the weekend. I have had it for some time, but only recently had a chance to sit down with it.
The standout routines for me were IHOP (especially the Redux version that has been updated and improved greatly), Predicted Card at Thought of Number and You DID Do-It-Yourself. I will be working these into my repertoire. The others effects in the book are mostly good, but either didn't fit my style or I have other similar tricks that I prefer. Madison already went into a lot of detail, so not much else to say. For $30, you get a very well-written book with 10 routines of varying difficulty- you are getting a lot of really great value for your money here. Strongly recommended for all lovers of card magic. By the way, I agree with Madison's thoughts about having to do a lot of rather difficult work one-handed behind your back in You DID Do-It-Yourself. I came up with a revised handling that simplifies this greatly- if anyone is interested, PM me and I'll share my handling. |

I enjoyed it as well. Scott is very creative and is skilled at layering methods, both sleights and gimmicks. Most of the material is more magicky than I will probably use as a mentalist, but the thinking is solid and no doubt this stuff is all very deceptive.
IHOP and PCATON are probably two that I will perform, at least casually. I might add a small bit to IHOP to make a certain common card sleight a little more deceptive, but it's generally very good. PCATON is still my favorite. Direct, simple and lots of smoke. I actually prefer it with 1 deck though, just having a written prediction. The second to last effect - to the 4th power - is very intriguing and looks amazing. I would perhaps encourage Scott to consider marketing this separately along with the required cards. I would definitely love to get ahold them pre-made as it's beyond my capacity to make them and I don't believe Card Shark is making single cards custom at the moment.
