Rockler had this dado set in their catalog this. Looks like a great way to make a box.

WOW! I would fear the folds might splinter unless you wet them first. Great concept though.

I think you score from the back before the fold. Seems like folding across the grain would be the biggest problem. Another problem I see is that you have to move the fence to the other side to make cuts 3 and 4. You will have to lower the blade and get it back to a perfect height before cutting. Thinking hard about getting this, but at $350 I'm gonna want some reviews.

I saw one in passing at the local Rockler. I didn't stick around to long because I saw the price tag but I don't remember any scoring on the outside but it did have painters tape over it during the folding (I think that is what prevented the splintering) I love the concept but was wondering if I could achieve a poor mans version with a V bit on the router table. ( yes I realize the joint would not be near as strong) It is something I will probably play with this winter.

It is advertised as use with plywood. Whenever I make a box, it is out of solid wood, so I'd have no practical use for this product.

Rockler does their Saturday morning classes where they often introduce new products so I'm wondering if the would be demonstrated there.

Trying to grasp the practical aspect of this. Every box has to start with a piece of wood large enough to accommodate the parts layout. I commonly make use of small pieces of stock to accomplish the same size box.
Wood grains are never completely going to match, except on a couple of corners. That wouldn't matter to me because I only paint plywood boxes. Depth of cut would be extremely critical, as problems would occur with both a hair too shallow or a hair too deep. Clever idea, but it strikes me as another doctor/lawyer tool.

That is where I saw it Gary.
I agree that the depth of cut is critical Michael that is why I was wondering about the router table My depth is a whole lot easier to adjust precisely on my router table. |

I agree the big problem here is getting the bade set just perfect twice. You have to move the fence to the other side of the blade for cuts 3 and 4 so you would need to lower the blade or take the fence off to move it. Not very practical for 1 box. Might be worth it if you were running 10. Probably going to pass on this as you are paying mainly for a new dado set I don't need.

I have no doubts that this has benefits somewhere. I just haven't seen how it would benefit me. Not sure if there would be a similar profile available in a router bit, although I know of some that make other complex joinery possible.

I use this one all the time when doing casework:
https://www.rockler.com/rockler-45-deg-l......odCnQEeQ again kind of finicky with set up, however makes the joints so tight. I have the larger one for 3/4 work I don't know if I would use it for smaller handheld boxes. |

I bought a bit to do a locking miter from Grizzly. the thing was just a pain to set up. It was a pretty expensive bit that just sits in a drawer. Probably what would happen to this dado set. Like some magic, looks great in the video then you get it and it sits in a drawer.
