Its worth noting that this serie was shot in 1987 so Marlo was already 74 years old at the time. So don't expect him to be on his prime. Also it is worth noting that this series is more along the lines of Steve Forte Gambling protection series than common magic teaching tapes. In other words most material isn’t thought here but just shown. In most cases Marlo might show quickly what is going on but not even that in most cases.
Also at least the first three videos are just demonstration of techniques. It is one camera home shoot where most moves aren’t done in context of routines. They are just done as demonstration of moves. I will probably get the hate from all the Marlo fans and students by this but after watching these tapes I still am wondering why Marlo was considered to be a great technician??? Yes, on the tapes he is old and camera doesn’t blink but I could tell 99% of the time when he did a move. His bottom deals have finger flashes and one could even tell when he bottom deals eyes closed because of the sound. Yet it is quite remarkable how many different variations he can do on most of the moves demonstrated but does a magician really need more than two ways to deal a card from bottom; one and two handed... Even if someone might find what I have wrote so far purely negative I have to admit that there is some interesting stuff here as well. Most of it seems to come from Marlo Magazines that are known to cost a lot these days! Vol.2 for example has some nice rather easy table passes. Vol.3 Has some nice looking multiple card palms that I had not encountered before. Also tips on botop change are worth mentioning. Switchless switch is also rather clever. Vol.4 has some complete tricks that aren’t really earth shattering but they tend to be different. For example there is ace assembly where aces are clearly seen sticking out of the deck and they assemble under spectators hand. Handling isn’t perfect but effect wise I haven’t seen assembly done this way anywhere else. It was also interesting to see Marlo version of invisible card that lately was restructured by Michael Vincent on his dvd sets. Marlo's 2nd version of this has really sneaky unpublished lapping move 5th volume is non card material but it is only 33mins. In the end I can’t still recommend this without reservations. With price tag of +100$ at least I personally expect to really learn something that I can use and in my case I didn’t. I saw lots and lots of moves and most of them I can’t see anyone really using since there already are tons of moves that do the exact same thing but better. However historians or people who like Marlo might like to spend the 4,5 hour watching him. |

I am a huge Marlo fan but I do also appreciate the brutally honest review. Most people wouldn't be that honest and only point out the good parts. I will still likely get this in the future (as I had already decided) since EVERYTHING in the L&L catalog eventually goes on sale (and usually for a song and a dance). Maybe a sale price a few years from now around $30 wont burn so badly (and have enough usable teaching to justify it). Glad to know that it does have some worthwhile stuff in it that may not already be "out there" though. I think the "Malone Meets Marlo" dvd set is a very nice primer in getting to know some Marlo routines (besides his numerous books that are full of greatness). Thanks for the review.

That didn't take long. It is now on sale for 70% off ($38 roughly). I grabbed it up for that price. Have not watched more than about 20 mins of vol 1 so far. He goes over moves and talks about the differences of say - a Strike and a Take. He shows different hand positions when explaining grips. It is not bad so far but it is also not an "In-Depth" teaching video at this point. Although with the very little I have seen I have picked up 2 pointers I hadn't thought of before. I will post a review after I watch them all (In the review section) and link to it from here.
By the time I post a review, it likely will not still be on sale (plus they only do the 70% sales 2-3 times a year, the other sales are 50%-60% usually and sometimes only on certain products. For this price grab it up. You will certainly learn something worth $30. And if nothing else, just sit back and enjoy watching a master at work.

Fortunately, I didn't have to wait long to get it on sale for 70% off. As to your first notes, I would liken this to the 6 dvd set of Brother John Hamman. Home video's with someone in the background asking for clarification of a move. Although the Hamman videos are better in my opinion because it is ALL in context and typically an effect is taught using each move he shows. Quote:

The counterpoint I must make is - "I can only HOPE/DREAM of being that good when I hit that age". Close your eyes and imagine him in his prime. Way before you could just do a google search or watch an exposure video on YouTube. He will always be someone I will idolize for years to come. As for the Marlo Vids, I don't think I wasted a penny at the sale price. There is a lot of material there. Even though he doesn't go really in-depth while teaching every move, you can watch his finger positioning and get a sense of his timing. The guy behind the camera is helpful in several instances also. He asks quite a few questions exactly when "I" was thinking "How do you... Why do you... What can you..."? You also hit the nail on the head when you wrote "However historians or people who like Marlo might like to spend the 4,5 hour watching him."

If anyone is still interested, It is still 70% off for the set. Well worth the sale price (although the regular price is a little steep for what it is). I do actually recommend it at this sale price of $38.99 http://llepub.com/index.php?main_page=pr......s_id=730 grab it up before the holiday sale ends.

If you missed it last year, LLepub now has all 5 volumes on sale as a Black Friday download bundle for $38.99
Certainly a value no matter your opinion of the videos. |
