I'm a huge fan of ring and rope work be it using a large harness type ring or using a borrowed finger ring. I'm not looking for routines as I'm very happy with the routines I have already, that's not to say I can't improve them haha
What I was wondering is do the workers out there prefer to use the larger type ring and rope/cord routines or do you prefer the borrowed finger ring approach ? Large rings are great to use for the following reasons : You don't need to ask for a ring to use Large rings are great for visibility As your always using the exact same ring the moves become much easier to perform You won't be accused of damaging or losing a spectator's ring ( not that I ever have ) Borrowed rings are great to use for the following reason : You can perform when put on the spot as long as you have a shoe lace/cord Effects with borrowed objects are always stronger because of the emotional hook A borrowed ring can end up in an impossible location which once again is always very strong Obviously both have their advantages but some magicians prefer one over the other so I wanted to hear other peoples thoughts on the subject Thanks for your time Warren |

I feel the choice should be guided by audience and setting more than personal preference. While some of the presentations are similar,
the expectations of any audience may be different. As noted, there are advantages to each. It isn't just a matter of visibility or using a 'borrowed' object. I may be influences as to what comes before and what after. If I am going to do linking rings I might add a couple of Ring on Rope effects -- a finder ring will not work. Alternately, while waiting at the car repair shop you find a couple of rubber O-rings and entertain the other bored victims. Thye only reason I now perform more "large" ring effects is from crippled hands that have eliminated some sleights I prefer.
