At one time, only the big boys in magic got a chance to do this. Thank God times have changed so that the "Big, small, and ALL" of us can show what we got. At least for myself, I first saw these guy's budding greatness from right here on the Café. So win, lose or draw, I cheer their every effort as they have gotten the unique opportunity to throw it all out on the line behind great creativity, accomplishment & respect, to do what they love and entertain some of the greatest audiences anywhere. I think in the same episode they said next to nothing and then Allison says "so I guess that means you didn't fool them", and I thought, "wait... they never really said anything cryptic or obvious on this one". Editing, Editing, Editing. All over that show - but isn't that to be expected?

And regarding Glenn's routine: I had no idea he was going to be on that episode and I was literally sitting on my couch practicing his palming technique (not with the pinky) and there he is on tv making it look easy while I struggle. Those hands are giants, but they are pretty smooth.

I'd like to sincerely thank all of you for your nice comments and support.
It was a great experience to be on the show. It was certainly a new experience for me. I interacted with several different people affiliated with the show and every one of them was very nice and very professional. At some point pretty early on, I came to the realization that fooling Penn and Teller wasn't the most important thing to me. What was most important to me was to represent myself, the trick I performed and the art of sleight of hand to the best of my ability. If I did those things well, I'd be happy with myself regardless of whether I fooled Penn and Teller. If I could have a "do-over," I would take it of course because there were things I believe I could have done a little better. But for the most part, I was very happy with how things turned out. I had a great opportunity, I did my best and I had a lot of fun in he process. That's 3 good things! Thanks again for all of your nice comments. Oh, and for the record, my hands are pretty normal in size compared to guys I've compared them with. Although, my fingers are on the fatter side of the spectrum. I've certainly met my share of people who have the same or bigger size hands than mine. And Atomic111, I don't actually use the Morphew One Hand Top Palm in the trick but please stick with it because when it clicks for you, it will become effortless and automatic and you will have a great weapon in your card magic arsenal. -Glenn

I got to see Glenn lecture at the Magic Pebble convention a while back. His palming techniques were a highlight. But all of his stuff was in the "must have" category. I recommend that everyone visit www.povmagician.com and check out Glenn's products. I have the 3 Shell Boot Camp, the Alien Ring, the Rub-A Dub Deluxe Suit and other videos with multiple routines. This stuff is great!
I'll also take this opportunity to congratulate Glenn directly! Great job dude! Mike

Glenn, yes, I'm working on it. Sometimes it clicks and sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be mostly related to the moisture on my hands at the time. But its fun when it clicks.

What's Alison Hannigan really like? She seems nice and genuinely awesome, but sometimes on the show she acts really goofy.

Thank you very much Mike and Steve.
When I get two heavy hitters like you guys liking my stuff, I know I'm doing something right. Atomic111... yes, having some moisture in your hands is a requirement. I don't have the natural moisture in my hands I had in my youth. I lost that when I turned 40. So, I had to figure a few ways to get it back before I could perform many sleights let alone my top palm. That's why I recommend the products I found to work well for me in the video. fonda57... well, personally I found Alyson to be witty, charming, intelligent, funny and sexy when we were on our dinner date. Oh, wait. That was just in a dream I had. lol In reality, I spent only enough time with Alyson to explain I needed her to sign the 6 cards and once she did, she should go back and take her seat. That being said, I do think Alyson is not only a very nice person, she is a talented professional who wears many hats. She interviews, converses, entertains, assists, and shoots intros and outros among other duties. I really think she does a great job. -Glenn

That's really a great routine. I got fooled many times and there are quite a few great palming techniques there.

I thought the act was absolutely exquisite. Perfect timing, script, misdirection, sleights. Couldn't have enjoyed it more. Like many here, I know the classic effect; but hey, Mr Morphew, I was fooled. One of my more enjoyable episodes. Once again, proud of the Café as well. Lynn

Sorry to go on a bit of a tangent here:
Mike, I don't think P&T could ever take a half hour to form a theory; the practicalities of television production won't allow it. The show is recorded in front of a live audience that isn't gonna sit through that much down time. And in TV and film, time really is money. They recorded eight acts on the same day. There was no time for retakes or lengthy discussions. Performers got one shot at it. Before recording the segment, the producers said P&T usually confer for three to five minutes. In my case, they conferred for double that, but that's very rare for them. They really can't push it beyond that. |

Hum...
I liked the routine, though I thought that a few times, things could have been smoother. I found rather easy to follow what was happening while very smartly constructed. To paraphrase what someone else said in that phrase: P&T don't have to be able to reproduce it, but they can nonetheless very well identify all the major parts of an act or effect. At some point, it doesn't matter whether the top and second cards were switched by a 2nd deal or a top ch****. They think in terms of process (eg, switch two cards, palm a card, do a blind shuffle, etc), whatever the actual technique is used. I'm pretty sure they perfectly understood how the routine worked, and that they were able to appreciate it nonetheless. P! |

Thanks for the input David. I don't recall who mentioned the lengthy thinking time. It definitely sounds impossible as you point out. I'll ask Mike Close next time I see him him. Meanwhile I won't muddy the waters any further.

Vinny:
Well, for example 1) Behavioural: Showing/counting the cards was awkward due to the position of the hands and of the camera. His body is "closed" over the cards. This handling is not the ideal way to reduce suspicion. 2) Technical: At 2:34, just after the palm, he fumbles while taking the cards. I still think the effect can be great, but I think that day's performance was blemished by such accidents. Those are definitely things that could've gone smoother. P! |

I was pointing out the difference between what happened in the theater and what aired on TV. The episode doesn't air live; it's edited for time. I asked the producers how much time P&T usually take to discuss and form a theory. They said three to five minutes. While P&T discuss, Aly Hannigan does the post-performance interview. This happens onstage in front of the audience. On the day, when the clock reached the six-minute mark and P&T were still discussing, Aly ran out of questions to ask me, so I started interviewing her. Then the two of us started doing running commentary on what P&T were doing. Eventually, with the clock ticking on, she said "I think they've talked enough. I'm gonna interrupt them." So she did. Only the first minute or two of that onstage interview was shown in the episode. After being interrupted by Alyson, P&T admitted that they hadn't been able to come up with a working theory. Mike speculated that P&T might discuss for up to a half hour, but I don't think that's possible, given the constraints and demands of television production in front of a live audience. What they did while recording my segment was about the limit of what they can reasonably do in a fast-paced production schedule of recording eight acts per day.
