It's a little embarrassing to ask this question..
In nearly every book/video/etc. about card magic I've seen, even the very basic ones assume you know the dealers grip. Well, I didn't. OK, I have learned it by now, but I still don't know how the cards are dealt from it. Do you push them off to the top (over the left index finger) or to the right (over the other three fingers)? |

No question should be embarrassing.
The cards are dealt, from the dealer's -- or mechanic's -- grip by pushing them individually with the left thumb either to the left, the right, or straight ahead, whichever you find most comfortable. A book that I very highly recommend is Harry Lorayne's The Magic Book. Originally written for the lay reader, it assumes nothing! It begins by explaining a deck of cards and then goes into shuffles -- not flourishes or false shuffles, but regular shuffles; you would be amazed at the number of people who don't know how to shuffle a deck of cards. The book deals with magic done with things that you find around the home or office but the first quarter is basic moves with cards -- not tricks, just basic handling. |

Card College is also good at explaining the basics. I was in the same situation, before begining magic I used cards to play duplicate bridge, there you just get 13 cards given to you, no one deals or shuffles.
Card College assumed nothing and got me to the stage where I looked competent with a deck of cards. I'm still working through the later volumes, but the first one was invaluable. David. |

If it helps you to feel better, the first thing they teach you in "dealers school" (where they train blackjack dealers) is how to shuffle and deal cards. Everyone has got to learn sometime and if you watch how many people shuffle and deal, they all have different nuances to it.
The problem for a magician is that you want ALL your dealing to look the same, be it as a regular deal, a second deal, a bottom deal, etc..., and that is where you need to learn a mechanics grip. PSIncerely Yours, Paul Alberstat |
