Hey guys,

I've been asked to perform some magic to around 20 people at an art festival. I was wondering if you had any ideas/actual tricks that I could perform that involve 'art'. I've seen a couple of tricks out there on the market that involve spray paint and paint brushes and I will certainly look a little more into these effects. But I would be really grateful if you guys knew of any tricks that directly involve art props that I could use (e.g potentially a pot of paint or an art canvas etc) or if you guys had any ideas on turning a classic trick in magic into something art based. For example, an appearing wine bottle could be turned into an appearing pot of paint.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

You might get more input on the altering tricks to fit an art theme if you post this in "Secret Sessions", but regardless, a couple of thoughts off the top of my head...

Jay Sankey has a marketed mental effect using a picture of the Mona Lisa called Deranged. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK9B8UdFkUQ

A Sand Frame would lend itself to the theme.

A funny gag (at least to me) would be to take a picture of painting of a regular looking woman, tear it up...mix the pieces up...restore the paper...but now the picture is a Picasso woman's picture from his cubist period (you know, eyes on one side of the head, nose on the chin, etc.)

There is a great marketed mental effect where a spectator colors in a simple outline picture of a man (like a coloring book picture) with his random choice of markers and the completed picture matches the magicians prediction - same color shirt, tie, pants ,etc. There are other routines possible, but the props fit with the arts theme. See the performance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLbcc7Bo3_g

Good luck.

I could see Justin Flom's Card Artistry working perfectly for you

And probably Cardtoon by Dan Harlan too

I don't think that you have to change your repertoire to perform in an art festival. Magic when performed well is an art, If you try to put brushes or pallettes etc you will diminish your art . Iam a painter I make my living from art, if someone asked me to perform in an art festival, I would perform high class magic,, without many props, pure magic is an art.
For me all these tricks with “arty” props diminishing your art and create a very superficial relation about magic and “art”.
