I'm still working my way through RRTCM but I'm not happy with my progress. Is it a good idea to set targets, for example, setting a date by when I when to have gotten a certain sleight or move down, and practice nothing else until I do this? The only reason I ask is that even when I reach the date, I still might not have the sleight at at a level I'm happy with. Sorry if the post is worded a bit poorly.

Michael,
This is really something you have to decide for yourself. I personally don't like to set dates when it comes to learning, I think they are often unreachable. There is so much involved in learning a sleight or effect. Often you will not be able to do it for a long period of time and then one day it just falls into place. My method is to pick a few effects/sleights and work on those few untill I have them all down. Variety is the spice of life. I will leave you with a thought on the subject that I have been told many times, and it makes a lot of sense: Unless you know where your going, you'll never get there. So setting goals is a good idea, but make them realistic!! oh, and have fun!!

Dates don't matter! practice, practice, practice until it feels comfortable. Only you know what is comfortable in your hands.
Some things I learned, I could show friends and family in a couple of days, some things in a couple of weeks, other things took years. It depends on the magnitude of the sleight.

Well the answer would be yes and no. It is good set for goals but you don't long it may take for you to learn a sleight. I would make a list of sleights that you want to learn then organize these from the most important to the least important. Then use this list to help you focus your practise time on the most important sleights by recording the time spent on each one. This way you can change it up some and not burn out. If your a list and a goal type of person the joy of crossing out a accomplished task on a list is great.
" The difference between a dream and a goal is a deadline" by Hooda Hecknose Its a quote I live by though. A great book is Time Management for Dummies. Your local library should have it. Once you gain the book I would focus on the chapter about master lists to your daily planner and between. It changed my productivity by unbelievable amounts. I now have a ten year plan and I'm only a few years behind. LOL Your lists and goals do change. Good luck

Hi Michael,
You may like to set target dates to get your focus right. But as far as you go ahead and follow the magic mantra of Practice, Practice, and Practice... deadlines do not matter. Again, you will be performing an effect only once you have mastered it. Thus, while you can set a rigourous timetable to practice and master the same, I doubt you can set a timeline (target date) for performance. A target date may at times help in expediting the mastery of an act. But I don't think this will work always. Go with your confidence, and instinct. And most importantly, enjoy Magic! |

The ammount of pressure will be the ammount of fun you take away from what you're doing. And if you do your best and don't achieve (word?) what you want, you will feel bad about something that is supposed to be FUN.
Too much risk involved if you ask me ;-) Hope this helps. |
