Toni Braxton’s recording of this song is probably my favorite female vocal performance of the past two decades. So emotional in the lower range, without any unnecessary vocal acrobatics, and saving her high range for the dramatic last chorus. The musical arrangement is excellent, too, supporting her voice tastefully throughout, and building beautifully towards the end.

Fascinating song, Arthur. You're right, the performance is outstanding. Powerful, yet restrained.

I can almost imagine this being a climactic moment in an opera (thematically, not stylistically).

To be honest, I don't particularly like the piece, but I do share your enthusiasm for the performance.
