By the way, unless you have never seen a play in which the actors "ape" the script every time it is presented, the idea of imitating or presenting a set script holds no water and makes no sense. The idea of "do it your way" is fine, but not necessarily a rule if in fact a magician is an actor playing the part of a magician. I kind of agree that too much exposure is not a good thing, but the ads for this book test tells me nothing other than how nice it looks and how well made it is. Just say something like "you can use this to...." or "this would be perfect in a situation where..... etc, This test says nothing other than what you can do to show how you can tell someone the color of the food on the page selected or a word on the page. The fact that is a cookbook, is totally the opposite of what the selling point is. Why on earth would one use a cookbook? AS I said, if I were doing a show at the Culinary Institute, it would make sense. Otherwise, I'll just save my money. Arthur |

Quite frankly, Arthur, I don't care if you never buy the book. I've no vested interest either way. I was merely pointing out that any effect/routine that you buy , in my opinion has to have, and say something about YOU the performer. Otherwise it does become a situation where everyone is mimicking everyone else. That soon becomes old and predictable. By the way,I was a regular theatre goer a number of years ago when I lived in Dublin. I am very au fait with actors and scripts. I had a long conversation one night with the very fine actor, Brian Dennehy, when he was in Ireland performing. I myself have done a lot of stage work performing Mentalism. I don't think it is a correct parralel to draw when speaking about the two arts. I never want to sound scripted when I perform. The tired and overused phrase of the Magician playing the actor, etc, etc, has being misquoted so much over the years that it has lost all meaning. Anyway, I still believe a book like this has it merits but it needs to be thought out. It looks like you or I won't be buying it for different reasons..

The book simply helps the participant focus his or her attention helping to block out distractions. The book is also suppose to be handled inconsequentially. It's just there or been brought to the show because it's something your reading or find interesting. So in the case of a cookbook I believe the REASON for it being in your show is an important consideration. Why such a book? Are you planning a meal with a special someone? Do you just like to cook? For the prop to look natural a REASON for it's inclusion matters. So presentationally we must consider it's justification. Just my two cents.
No matter how many times you say the wrong thing, it will NEVER be right.

How come you couldn't say something like, "I grabbed a couple of books to use for this experiment" and lay out two (or however many you'd like) tests - Giving the audience the appearance of options. Even better if you already have a 'novel' test. Offer two that look very different.......

I bring out a tote bag from a bookstore with a bunch of books in it—usually MOABT, Flashback, and a few ungimmicked books that can be used with Flashback. I say that I stopped at the bargain bin the other day and I wanted to try something with my purchases. I also say something about each book (my wife read the first chapter and she said it was the worst novel ever written, etc) The cookbook would make a great addition to the mix—it’s authentic appearance is convincing—it couldn't be a trick book (I made a pasta dish from this book the other night. Pretty delicious! Sir, take this and look through it...
