Hello,
so, my background: I'm not a "professional magician", rather I am an ambitioned "LARP"-er playing a mage. If you don't know what LARP is: Its short for Life Action RolePlaying, or, as I like to put it, dressing up in fantasy clothing and hitting each other over head with foam weapons in the forest. Now, magic naturaly is a complicated concept in LARP, since on the one hand its "you can what you can act" and on the other hand, magic is hard to act. On most LARP's there is a "Replacement System" for magic in place (if you want to throw a fireball you throw a silikon ball) - wich is fine and needed for the fights, but a mage should be able to show off outside of those. Now, I already bought the pyro mini from elusionist, and while I usualy read "The pyro is just a effect, not the trick", if you want to be throwing fireballs for show, its perfect. (also, a fantasy gransmaster of magic doing some card tricks or vanishing coins behind his ears may not be the best indicators for his mental health). For what I wear during my "perfomance": A robe with long sleeves, a heavily ornated leather armor and leather bracers (the bracers are inside the sleeves). Since LARP is usualy outside visibility and robusty are very important for these products. So, with that background: I'm looking for something to make fog around my hands. From my research I found there are 4 products that do this: Mystery Smoke Pure Smoke Vapr Magic Smoke What I can't seem to find are detailed reviews on how these devices fare against each other, or wich would be best suited for my "needs" (as detailed in my background). Also, some of them seem to be out of print (pure smoke), without any realy indications wether there is just a shortness in production or these things aren't in production any more at all. So, after you read through all of this: Wich Smoke device would you advice to me? Or maybe there are smoke devices I don't know about? If you know about any other gimmiks that could be great for playing a mage in LARP it'd be great if you'd also mention them (Currently thinking about Elusionists Electric Touch+, but I'm still doing some research wether or not I'll be able to use it to its fullest... I also took a look into magma about a year ago, but here I'm concerned about practibility and stability) |

I have never used any of the smoke devices, so can't comment on those, but a fairly cheap fun thing could be D'lites. You can reach into the air and grab a red (or other colors, if you buy the right gimmicks) light. If you use that as a lead-in to a fireball, you get the light, though not the smoke. And they are not too spendy.
Other than fireballs, what spells do you use in your particular RPG? I'm assuming a cleric is who you need for healing spells. So what else would YOU be doing on the field? -Patrick |

Nothing to do with special effects, just some ideas for LARPing as a magic user... Mind you, I'm thinking of the roleplaying part more than the running around part.
With a well stacked deck of Tarot cards (or with some sleight of hand) you could try and manipulate important persons. Maybe the commander chief of the High Guard is unabashedly superstitious? Or if there's a minimum of a "village" setting, you could disguise your magic at first and be known as a rogue-like character, doing the three-card-monte scam and filling your purse with gold! Then, only when the going get tough, you surprise everyone by throwing that plastic ball while screaming "Fireball! 5 Damage!!" A PK-Ring kind of gimmick (a magnetic ring) could be cool. Find one of those small "chinese" puzzles made of bent metal rods and sew it into your purse opening to use as some sort of lock. No one wants to spend two minutes searching your dead corpse for gold. BTW, have you checked in advance with the LARP organisation, in regards to pyrotechnic effects? I'm pretty sure anything you bring would have to pass "control" just like buffer and latex weapons have to. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. |

After thinking a bit, I wonder if Shin Lim’s S.S.S. could work. Instead of it being attached to a close up working surface, attaching it in a sleeve.

Another from Shin Lim, Cloud 9. In the trailer he created smoke ball between his palms (don't know thou how that could be done outdoors)
