Been reading very positive reviews of Paul's wallet mentalism products over the years and decided to pick up his latest offering, depiction.
On his site he has a package deal where you can buy two for $40 so will try something else at the same time. What would people recommend as the best of his wallet effects? |

The short answer is that it depends on your target audience. If you want something to do in a quiet place with just one other person and you have their attention and focus, then Animania or Dreamweaver are both excellent choices. (I actually prefer Animania to Dreamweaver because the people I perform for are not close friends. We have normally just met, in a professional context, and this provides a great way to showcase one's abilities without getting too personal).
If you want something that demonstrates your abilities when people ask what you do or you want to get a "baseline" on someone before moving onto deeper mysteries, then Lexicology or Test Conditions would work nicely. Both of these work great with groups from 2-4 people. If you are dealing with a small-ish group of 5-10 people then Symbolism is a great choice. Of course, don't forget the wallet ESP cards. Been using these of late, and love the look of them. Once you clearly define your target audience, the right card(s) will be clear. Good luck.

Steven:
Thanks for your very helpful reflection on the best contexts for each of these props. I would only propose the following addition: that the main Hoy-type effect from the Symbolism prop can play well for a large audience George |

Agreed. Good point, George. It will play for a parlor-sized audience. Personally, I prefer to use these cards for smaller, informal performances but it can certainly work for audiences of that size.

My favorite is still his Lexicology. It is genius. It is a good three phase routine you can perform for a small group anytime, anywhere.

While I like much of the cards on the market today, imo you don't really need them. Psychological Subtleties give the performer much of what's usually on cards like these and can be performed with just pen and paper. The cards of course have there own effect on them but the outside effects seem unnecessary and there almost to justify the price of the cards.
No matter how many times you say the wrong thing, it will NEVER be right.

While you are correct, Senor, that there are many great effects you can do with pen and paper, trying to reproduce these particular effects would be quite difficult. Of course, they are not necessary, but one could argue any prop is unnecessary.
For me, it's about efficiency and conveying a concept in the most expedient way possible. When I have more time, and the focused attention of my participant, I'll do a longer bit, but these cards are a great way to segue into specific topics quickly. To each his own, but I have them, I use them, and they work well for me.

I am just now studying Paul's "Re-View" effect, which focuses on the mentalism challenge of "remote viewing." So far, I like this and the instructions are very well done. I did not have a remote viewing type effect before, so this nicely fills a hole. Could be played for a range of one person to a parlor size audience.
