It is often wise to protect both a table and expensive props and avoid sound. Some sleights with coins and such require as soft mat.
Professionals may have preference to meet specific needs, but I found some great ones on Amazon, They are microfiber, double sided, foam filled and feel a bit like shaved terrycloth. They fold or roll up and then lie flat. I got the red 16X18 but they come in other colors and larger size. As an add on item they were $3.97 each - regular $4.99 Very pleased. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M3Z......TF8&th=1

These are available in Walmart, discount stores, and even dollar stores. I have several, and they are cheap enough I have a couple I can take anywhere and not worry about them getting damaged or dirty or lost.

I have been using them for some time after finding them in Dollar Tree for a buck apiece. Besides being useful for magic, my cats love to sleep on them.

Looking for a free alternative? Harbor Freight frequently has a coupon for a free micro fiber cloth pack with any purchase. Plus there is a 20% off coupon on the same page. If 12 X 12 is too small the pack comes with four cloths in different bright colors. A minute or two on the sewing machine and you have a bright and functional mat 24 X 24. And best of all, did I mention FREE?

This has not been a problem in my application, but can see how it might be.
If so, there is another kitchen item that works - rubberlike waffly drawer liner between the slick surface and pad.

Hi Funsway,
This is a great idea. Would it work for a Matrix effect, in which one side of the coin needs to pop up when you press the other side? And does it work for a card mat, for ribbon-spreading, for instance? -- or does the mat bunch up? You also suggested a drawer liner. Do you need to attach the drying mat on top of the liner, or can you just let the drying mat rest on the liner? Thanks for your help, Bob |

Different "cheap" products work differently, so you have to experiment. May have to do with which province in China they come from

Actually, though, Ken, I didn't make it clear that I was curious about your experience with the particular mat that you recommended, which is still available on Amazon. So would be mat you recommended accommodate Matrix & ribbon spreading?
Thanks again... |

Yes, I use it on top of a walker tray for many coin effects
