Roy Walton has a nice version in The Complete Walton Vol 3. Michael Vincent has a great handling on his DVD also.

One way to deal with the last two cards is to have the spectator's cards be a full house rather than 5 random cards. Then you can show the spectator the last two cards and have him or her take whichever card makes their hand better. I believe this idea comes from David Solomon's Mexican Poker. This eliminates ALL equivoke from the routine and, unlike a similar routine that eliminates equivoke, guarantees that the performer ALWAYS gets a royal flush.

Thanks for your input David however I've found a solution which I'm very happy with now.

I am not sure what your solution is/was. I replied to your original post so that in years ahead when I am looking for a solution to the stated problem, I will find the solution I came up with years earlier. Also, maybe someone will find it useful. Happy Independence Day! David Martin |

It would potentially appear to have been overly set up from the outset (unless the spectator shuffled them before the deal). By the spectator getting a decent poker hand, I think if would also possibly detract from the climax - your Royal Flush reveal. They'll normally get a pair; potential flush or run.....which is more convincing as a normal hand. This also gives you time delay - chatting about their potential hand is natural misdirection that supports the final choice from the 2 remaining cards. The concept of having two good hands also leads to having to cull 10 cards - not the easiest manoeuvre in the real world - particularly when their 'orbs are plastered on your mitts'. However, an open cull set up of 5 cards is brilliantly described by Paul Gordon on his Gold Dust DVD. It's quick, easy and isn't boring. Culling 10 cards? Really? What do you do to keep them entertained during this process - recite Shakespeare or Lord Byron? I guess it also depends on how you are presenting this effect. I do not perform it as a 'hard core' gambling trick - as most people in the UK haven't got a bloody clue about the ranks of Poker hands - a Full House therefore means nothing particularly special. However, they will recognise that your Royal Flush, that THEY have given to you, looks better than their random nothingness. Also, you then finish with a 'thank you' - as the spectator has given you the best hand - you haven't been a smart @rse and beat them. THEY performed the magic for YOU (a strong moment). As for the final choice of two cards. Why anyone would want to do a mexican turnover, bottom deal, etc. is completely beyond me. This type of 'improvement' leaves me cold. Why put in a move, when a move isn't required? I've used Paul's simple "top or bottom" equivoque since learning the effect quite a few years ago. It doesn't get questioned. Maybe I've got the confidence to just do it as taught - with the 2 cards held closely over your packet, it gives a subliminal indication that whatever option they call was going to be put onto your hand anyway (if they say bottom/and you turn up the top card throwing it on their hand saying "leaving you this"). This way, it really DOESN'T get questioned. To paraphrase Al Baker "why run when nobody is chasing you"?
