Does anybody know if there is any other four way coloring book on the market other than this one? ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoR-C_XSUkg)

I'm not aware of any, but there might be somewhere. There some 6 way coloring books, but they're hard to find. I personally don't recommend the four way coloring book you shared, BTW. I had it, but the way it was cut - either the style of cutting or perhaps the paperstock used) made the method much more obvious than the traditional one. I had a few kids call out of that there were "folders" in the book, because the cuts are done similar to the way a manila folder is cut.

Yes Mat, I bought it and don't like it all as it's cut makes very obvious.

I'm wondering if you could cut the "file tabs" down so they are not so obvious. You might have to make a gig so they all end up the same size.
Can you cheat the angle of the pages so you are bending the worst view back more towards you? -Mary |

I LOVE this coloring book. I've performed with it all the time. I feel if you just riffle Through the pages without stopping, you're fine. I seriously have never had anyone mention folders etc. You have to remember, the coloring book really is for the younger kids. If an older kid in the crowd is calling you out, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's magical to the smaller ones.

To both Mary and Tommy: I perform the coloring book in all my kids shows just not for the younger ones so in my opinion the large gaps will be noticed. The video does not do it justice on how bad it its on mine. I guess my question was answered that there is no other four way coloring book on the market; as you suggested Mary I may go ahead and try trimming down the tabs I just don’t want to mess it up and even if all goes well I still don't think it will be good enough.

If you have reached the point at which you are ready to try making your own coloring book, you'll find a few different approaches from our Magic Nook "Do-It-Yourself" e-Books. My "Coloring Book Revisited" from the Kid Show Magic section at The Magic Nook shows how to use real Dollar Store coloring books to make a version that allows you to restore the coloring book at the end to a book you can give away to your helper from the audience at the end, along with a box of crayons that come tumbling out of the book when the colors are removed.
Spellbinder's "Halloween Coloring Books" from The Wizards' Journal #24 makes use of inexpensive 5" by 7" coloring books that can be treated like jumbo playing cards (same size!) and merge the coloring book effect with, for example, a wild card effect done with coloring books. These are also inexpensive enough to give away at the end after magically restoring the book to its original condition. A whole different approach is taken in my "Coloring Card" (also found in the Kid Show Magic Section) in which a birthday card, sent to the birthday child in the mail, is brought to the show and magically colored by the actions of the audience. There's more than one way to produce a coloring effect in magic. Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki came up with an entirely different approach in his Magic Story Books in "Qua-Fiki's Corner" at The Magic Nook. In this case, you begin with a blank book and the audience determines what pages will appear one by one as together you create a fully colored story in the book page by page. The world is filled with wonders and you don't have to keep performing only the same old magic tricks that magic stores decide for you. If you are ready for a new direction, The Magic Nook is ready to help you along with new ideas.

I guess you are not yet ready to make your own coloring book, because once you know how it's done, you can make a two-way, three-way, four-way, five-way, and six-way book with only a bit more time and effort. Otherwise you are depending on someone else to do it for you. Good luck!

I have the Four Way "Nursery Rhymes Magic Coloring Book" with a witch riding a goose on the cover. I bought two of them several years ago. I've done this at least 100 times and never been called out on the indexing. On the back it says: Funtime Innovations, made in India. (2007)

From the video it appears that it may be the updated book of mine. Pictures are similar. However, it appears the die cutting has really been cheapened up, resulting in a very poor display of pages.

I am going to switch back to the 4 way coloring book. I forgot where I placed mine years ago.
I have been using the 3 way for many years. I wish there were more designs for the 3 way coloring book. When I get mine out some kids will say: "I know this one." |

Quick solution for those who don't have the time or interest or money to make a completely unique hand-colored coloring book from dollar store materials. Buy a dollar store coloring book and remove the cover. Then insert your old store-bought ready-made coloring book into the cover. At least the kids won't be able to immediately identify your book as being the same as every other magician's coloring book...or even the same as the one you used last time you performed (especially if you have a bunch of different covers to conceal the fact).
But to me, the ability to "restore" the coloring book at the end of the routine, by removing all the color and even pouring out the crayons from the rolled up book, and then giving that book and the re-boxed crayons to the child helper turns a magic store-bought "trick" into a genuine magical "happening" that won't be duplicated by any of your competitors... unless they beat you to the punch. And no one in your audience will confuse you with cookie-cutter magicians who can only buy and perform with the same old props everyone else is using. Dare to be Different.

You can also alternate by making and using one of Qua-Fiki's Magic Story Books, which has a different method of working from the old 1584 coloring book principle. The book starts out all blank, and then "random" pages begin to appear to tell a story with the characters in the story chosen by kids in the audience. They won't have seen that one, and there are a variety of different stories that can appear in the book each time you perform it. Of course, you have to print and make the book(s) yourself, but cutting and pasting is easier than carpentry.

I have a 4-way that I’ve been using for over 10 years. As you can imagine, it’s now quite dirty, with the binding having been re-taped several times. Since I couldn’t find a suitable replacement, and I didn’t want to give up my routine with the 4-way, I just decided to incorporate the well-used look of the book into the routine. Now, when I do the routine, I begin by telling the story of my recent visit to a bookstore.
“As I was walking through a bookstore recently, I saw a wall at the very back of the store that had some very old, dusty, and beat up books on the shelves. As I was looking through the books, I found one that said “Magic and Coloring Book”. I asked the bookstore owner about it, and he said it used to be owned by a world-famous magician many years ago. So I decided to buy the book, and I brought it here with me today. Would you like to see it? As you can see it’s quite an old book, with lots of fingerprints, blackened page edges, and the binding is even coming apart. But it still has all these nice pictures of magicians, bunnies, birds, and clowns,. Now the man at the store said that in order for this old magic book to work, I’ll need not one, but two magic helpers.” If I ever come across a new copy, I’ll buy it. But until then ... Brian |
