Greetings all. I hope all are well. I am an old newbie hobbyist looking for some suggestions.
I am looking for a book, although I would consider a video/DVD, that is a source of card tricks that does not primarily focus on pre-arranged setups or self-working effects. After about a year I have finished RRTCM and much of Harry Lorayne's The Magic Book, so I still consider myself a newbie. However, I have found that I prefer using the little sleight of hand I know in card tricks rather than pre-arranged decks since the latter always feel like I'm actually cheating. This is just my personal take, not a judgment of the preferences of others. Currently, I am looking through Harry Lorayne's Close-up Card Magic and as far as I've gotten (i.e., p. 65) the focus seems mostly to be on pre-arranged decks. Again, I do not mean to be overly judgmental. Even if so inclined, I am not nimble enough to perform trick #1 while also undetectably pre-arranging the deck for the trick #2. Perhaps I will eventually get there. But what I would like are suggestions for sources of sleight of hand card work. Even if difficult it may be what I need. After all, I expect that continued growth-through-challenge is always to be in store for myself as long as I pursue this hobby. Thanks for your attention.

TeddyBoy: What in the world are you talking about? The very FIRST item says - "This is one of the few effects in this book that requires a set-up of more than just five or six cards." And in many future books of mine I teach how to do that "impromptuly." And literally tens of thousands of people all over the world practically swear by that book. You really should know what you're talking about before you "talk about."

Close-up Card Magic by Harry Lorayne is one of the very best books on card magic (IMHO). I have had this book for many years and I refer to it regularly. You need to read more to fully appreciate the brilliant mind behind the routines.

I am not above reproach and I shall continue with Close-Up Card Magic especially in view of the suggestions that I've not absorbed the complete works therein.
I especially thank Terrible Wizard for the useful suggestions that I will consider.

You're welcome. Even if you continue with CUCM (a good idea anyway), I also suggest you check out the DVDs I listed to vary it a bit, and present some visual instruction. Enjoy!
