RE: "If I watch your "Totem" routine, Mr. Wild, and then go publish a book about it, not to mention it performing it everywhere I go, even if I'm saying, of this is Mike Wild's effect, I need your PERMISSION. To make it "right" anyhow."
Well, yes and no. I don't use any original sleights when I perform that particular routine, so fair use and all that legal mumbo jumbo would probably dictate that my permission is neither required nor applicable. Most of my original routines take classic sleight of hand and employ it in unique or different ways. It's my methods that are unique to me, not my particular handling of a palm or a flourish. For example, the "Totem" routine uses only Classic palm, finger palm, Ramsay's, the Bobo switch, the one-handed switch, and sometimes the Himber Sankey count. None of which I invented, all of which I give credit for appropriately in my manuscript. All that being said, I do see your point, and take your meaning. To be politically correct and demonstrate proper professional curtesy, permission is a nice thing to ask for and have prior to unveiling someone else's work. Best, Mike |

Question for Astinus - if you slice him open, hollow him out, and fill him with rocks, is there really any reason left to drown him?

Do be sure to let us know about that completed manuscript.
I believe what you are doing to give proper credit in performances is excellent. Brian |

Mike, I didn't meant to use your totem as a specific example, I had just heard it was a routine you had and were putting in your manuscript...my point was for ANYONE'S work. And one's own methods of stringing together classic slieghts can indeed be something unique and valuable, and I think it stretches a bit beyond "political correctness", to ask permission. Moral Correctness, and yes professional courtesy.
My point was what if one day, someone takes something you make and consider a simple little thing, and makes it famous...without your permission. How does that feel? I don't know...just seems like the way things should be. It's also NOT the way things ARE. |

Ok, well, maybe I will just ground him from his Lassen coin sets for a while.
