To be fair I do not own the effect. A friend performed it for me over a Skype session. While I was genuinely "fooled" by it I wasn't blown away because it felt a bit too procedural for my taste. It also 'seemed' more like a mental magic effect (not that there's anything wrong with it) than mentalism.
I tend to prefer mentalism effects that get right to the point because they better suit my own persona...Your mileage may of course be different. So, on the positive, this is definitely a bonafide 'fooler' that laypersons will surely enjoy, but is not something that interested me personally. |

I can only comment based on the very strong reactions I have seen from my audiences, but I am of course biased and you are free to take a different view even without having bought it. Perhaps others who have tried it would be best placed to comment on your view, and I wish you every success in finding things that suit your style better.

That read a little more curt than intended. I recognise that there are different views and styles and that's fine. For example, I've never thought that a mindreader should also perform close up 'magic' tricks e.g. coin tricks - a combination like that simply doesn't fit my character. (I also have the same issue with metal bending but others have made it work which is all good.) In terms of procedure, if I do this in a strolling environment I wouldn't do the whole thing - I'd strip it down to a bunch of just 16 cards with words on then the whole selection and reveal procedure would take no more than a minute or two at most. It still may or may not suit individual tastes of course, but I thought I should point out that it CAN be presented as a quick effect. The MIND5 performance video was a long performance as I tend to 'milk' each part a lot more for magicians and mentalists than I do for lay audiences. In its truncated form I understand that it would play as a '1 in 16' prediction effect (which could be turned round to a spectator as mindreader for your chosen number effect) - I wouldn't finish on that but as a strong prediction within a set it works fine with me. Each to their own and thanks for expressing your view.

Steve, no offense taken. Sure, there are many different approaches to our craft and the lines can often be blurred. It's up to each performer to find out what works best to suit the character they are portraying. When I perform a parlor/stage show I ONLY perform mentalism, but when I'm hired for a strolling gig I will 'split' my performance into two separate halves (sleight-of-hand segment and then later mentalism). This format seems to work well for me personally because I'm showcasing two separate 'skills' that I'm equally enthusiastic about. I have been told by many clients how much they enjoy this. So, to echo what you've already said, "it's all good" |

No offence taken here either. For those who have bought the project, don't forget to sign up to the Facebook group called 'Not Lost for Words'. I have posted a couple of extra tips in there and will post my thoughts about strolling versions when I can get a break between packing my house up to move. Others have also started to add some ideas which are good as well. I love the fact that people are thinking about how to use some or all of the parts to suit their own style.

To those who have purchased Lost for Words, if you haven't yet registered for the Facebook group (called Not Lost for Words) then come and join us! You'll need your copy of the book to answer the entry question and the extra tips I've posted I've tried to obscure to not make sense to non-owners but I think owners will find them really useful. On top of that, in the next couple of days I'm going to post a new variant. The original published version is ideal for parlour style performances but the slower build to the reveal would just take too long to work well for strolling. It can be cut down, which is what I've done before, but my preference is now to integrate the core method into a 3 phase solid mindreading routine that makes it perfect for strolling. That way you get quick hits, everything is tied in psychologically and spectators from different tables can talk freely and not discover anything. I'll be posting it on the Facebook group in the next few days, free to purchasers of the original trick as a bonus.

Just read through the book. Quality package. Super clever method that I was not previously aware of. Can’t wait to give it a whirl.
Ps. This is yet another killer trick where I read the instructions and immediately thought “It would be much easier to just use a Svenpad.” That said, this method is so clever I’d feel bad using the svenpad. |
