Hello
I am looking for some guidance for where I can find the mentalist performances which are just the performances without an explanation of how the performance is achieved. I appreciate there is youtube but I really want to own the DVD and pay the proper royalties. Examples of what I mean, Svengali and Evening of Wonders by Derren Brown. I enjoy watching these types of shows as they highlight how mentalists perform to the public and I get a lot of inspiration from them. I look forward to your responses and thanks in advance RH |

I suspect a lot of performers don’t want to share their shows because it makes it too easy to steal their material. As you recognize, the real secrets are not in the mechanics of the tricks, but in the presentation of the show. The secrets are not all that hard to learn, though sometimes expensive. But putting together a good clean show is far more than stringing some tricks together. And I would be reluctant to share that if I were trying to become a successful pro.
Too bad. I’d like some recordings of the same sorts of things. Solid shows, good local performers, different personalities. Patrick |

That, Mr. Woolery, is exactly why I don't share videos of myself performing.
Are you specifically looking for stage performances? The Mysterious World of Alain Nu has performances of mentalism in it. But it's more "Street" style. Somewhat like Blaine.

Hi
Thanks for the responses, I am looking for any performances but mainly stage. Obviously, I have watched Derren Brown, the mentalist routines in Dynamo and David Blaines acts, Fool Us etc. I have searched youtube, but I am old school and like to own the DVD's so I can go back and study them. I will check out Alain Nu, thanks for the recommendation, street or stage doesn't matter, watching different presentations in front of a real audience is what I am looking for. I saw Derren Brown live once as he came to our company and did an interview and a 'mini' live show. He was amazing. Although I want to see just the performances of other Mentalists. |

Personally, I think what Blaine and Dynamo do is mental magic.
I do think you're going to have a challenge finding real mentalism on video. Not only for the reasons above, of course, but also because it's a difficult thing to film well. Due to the cerebral nature of the art, in many cases "ya had to be there" for it to really make sense why people react the way they do. If you do locate some other good performances, it'd nice if you updated this thread and let us know.

The Paul Stockman "Connected" DVD has a 50 minute standup show in front of a live audience. Stockman then goes on to explain and discuss the act. I didn't like everything in the act, but the performance was pretty good to watch.
Don't know where you live, but Mark Toland tours pretty frequently, and has a terrific mentalism act--I just saw him at the San Diego Fringe Festival, where he won "Best Magic/Mentalism" performance at the festival. He performs regularly in Chicago. He only has two tour dates on his website right now, but you may want to keep an eye out for him: http://www.marktoland.com/tour/

Richard Osterlind Live Without A Net has a live stage show for a paying audience. Somewhat of a departure from the usual L&L canned audience. This is my favorite Osterlind video.
One of the most educational shows I’ve seen was a mentalist/sword swallower who performed at the local fair a few years ago. Nice guy and competent. Seeing what the audience liked and disliked, and especially seeing how he had changed his act a year later, really gave me food for thought. When feasible, go see live performances. Ask if you can take video. Just some thoughts. Patrick |

The Penguin Live Lecture of Jason Alexander (George from Seinfeld) was primarily stage performances of mentalism effects, so you might want to check that out. It was a great act!

You might get more suggestions in the Penny for your Thoughts room in the Café, or one of the other rooms where more mentalists hang out.
