Sad story.
I remember reading about these letters before - interesting that Maria Duval is a real person. They mention a 'sucker list'. Sounds a bit like a modern day 'blue book'.

Some time back, maybe 5 years ago, there was a bit of a hop-rah on here about Kreskin letters. Letters purportedly from Kreskin sent to people with the offer of psychic help for money. I can’t recall details, but I wonder if it was a similar scam.

Not so dissimilar to the type of scam described in Randi's "The Faith Healers." Sad and sickening.

And I had typed "hoo-rah" and autocorrect changed it to hop. -Patrick |

Happens in the Christian community as well, where an evangelical pastor will claim that a consecrated oil will heal and or fix anything wrong in ones life. Just send x amount of money and your troubles will be gone through the prayer of the congregation and this talisman. While I do believe in the power of prayer, I don't see the need for a charm of any kind to receive God's blessings. Shame on anyone using the disrepair of others to line their own pockets. Truly a retched offense.
No matter how many times you say the wrong thing, it will NEVER be right.

SF: It was a wretched offense, but in such a report like yours one might write terms like "evangelical" and "Christian" between quotation marks. We accept the word of too many con-men (of both genders) that they are "doctors," "scientists," "bishops," or whatever. Many are like an astrologist passing himself off as an "astronomer."
