Hello all...
I would like to do an illusion with a similar effect as David Copperfield's "13," just a little simpler. If you are not familiar with this idea, basically an assistant is vanished somehow and then reappears about a minute later in the back of the auditorium. I have looked at the Cane Cabinet, and I really like it. I was wondering if there is any other way to vanish an assistant and have her reappear in the back of the auditorium via some type of "get-away." I read that Jaxon's "Sheet Morph" could do this. Does anyone have information on this trick or another with an appearance/disappearance using a sheet? Any information on an appearance/disappearance using a sheet AND/OR information on illusions that allow the assistant to reappear in the back of the auditorium would be great. Thank you for your responses. |

Look at Maskelyne and Devant's Mascot Moth illusion. I know that Lance Burton performs a version of it, and I think it might be in one of Jim Stenmeyer's books - maybe Art and Artifice?

Doing the original version of the Mascot Moth is difficult in most modern theatres. There are other methods that are more suitable for current working conditions.
I did something like this at the Texas Renaissance Festival for several years. I vanished from the top of the Metamorphosis or from the Assistant's Revenge and reappeared at the back of an open air theatre, with a costume change. Since we did not have the advantage of side theatre walls, it required heavy misdirection.

Mr. Palmer,
oooo Misdirection. Wow, I can imagine the misdirection that might be needed to accomplish this effect is a sideless (?) theater. Care to elaborate what you did (misdirection...wise)? Must have been qutie the show! Feel free to PM me Dorian Grey
What you have seen this evening was real, though it may have nothing to do with reality.

To clarify,
The vanish that Lance Burton performs is nothing like the original Mascot Moth. The original Mascot Moth illusion requires extensive modification to both the stage and understage areas to perform it correctly. The cape is mechanical and it requires at least 4 people to perform it effectively. themagicman3, For a less complicated sheet vanish illusion that you can make someone appear in the audience check out the "Mark Wilson Course in Magic" for a prop/illusion called "The Mystery of the Magical Mummy." You can put this together for about $10. Sincerely, David

Depending how much you want to put into it, I worked on a show where the illusionist escaped from a spike chamber by being wheeled off stage in a set of deceptive stairs.
If you get the Rand Woodbury books or video, you can get the plans to make a pretty nice set of deceptive stairs that will only cost you the amount of building materials. |

Call ten volunteers to inspect a box inside which is your assistant. She can escape out by being one of them. What about the volunteers? No problem man... they are stooges. .... Just kidding, but hey it could work.
I used to do a version of the rocket illusion. I am inside a rocket and people dressed as scientists, with helmets and suits used to come and hand over things to me onstage. Since there was a lot of activity, it was impossible for the audience to distinguish me from others and of course there was a lot of smoke. Hope this helps. P.M me if you need more details. |

This book is very good, one of the illusions (I think it's the mystery mummy) was actually performed on a cruise ship I was on. This big magic show on a ship with 1200 passengers, and the idea comes from a 12.95 book, amazing! The magician disapears, then appears in the back of the auditorium blowing a whistle to get some attention! |

Have you thought of an Asrah levitation?

Just about any vanish or double exchange could be used to do that. So there are a large number of illusions that would work.
