Hi Harry,
I am looking to invest in another of your books. I have "Close up Card Magic" and love it. Which of your books do you recommend for a mentalist in search of self-workers and packet effects?

I'm not great for packet effects, although I've printed a few. Can only suggest that you go to harryloraynemagic.com - click on "Store" and then on "Magic Books." You can find a bit of information about each there. You'll find self-workers in probably all of them - but it's really difficult for me to "select" for you. Check out the LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION volumes - much variety in each. HL. (If you have any questions you can email me at the address under this post with the word "earthlink" in it.)

Many thanks for the reply Harry. I can see how my question put you on the spot (given your prolific output) so apologies for that. I have a copy of your Mathematical Wizardry on its way to me, courtesy of my cousin in New York who picked it up for me in Philly. I am sure that will give me plenty to chew on.
Bobby Forbes, many thanks for the references. I have performed 'Lazy Man's Card Trick' on more than a few occasions and it always goes down well, it's a fooler.

I'm sure you'll really enjoy my MATHEMATICAL WIZARDRY. You'd enjoy it more if it was purchased directly from me!!!!

If given a choice between a magician's video and his book, I'll take the video every time. I know he can perform the effect whereas I have no idea whether he can describe it adequately to me. YMMV |

Harry's writing style is quite simple to read and learn from. Writing magic instructions is not an easy task, yet Harry has the ability to put them in a way that makes sense and easy to follow.
A DVD is nice to see how the sleight looks, yet there are times that one needs to keep stopping, rewinding and replaying the instructions. When I am following along in a book, I only need to shift my eyes or turn back a page instead of hitting buttons with hopes of stopping and restarting where I need. @Harry, you say you gotta read the good stuff... You can also add... then you can do the good stuff. |

If you want to learn from a book, one thing you can do, as I am with a technique I am finding much simpler to do than to remember, is to go through the mechanics of the trick with cards in hand. Do the moves as slowly as needed. Do them again, still looking at the pictures at least 5 times. Try it without the book. If you do it right, do it a dozen times or so. Then look at the book again and make sure you aren't missing something. When learning a new skill, repetition is the key to memory and smoothness. But it isn't all that easy. One of my college professor's "favorite statements" was: "Repetitio est mater studiorum" ("REPETITION IS THE MOTHER OF STUDENTS"!
