Hello, does anybody know of anything I can put on my hands to stop them getting so sweaty and gross when I am doing card manipulation? I tried putting fanning powder on my hands to like dry them out but it did not work for long. I have tried peeling an orange just before I do any card stuff but that does not work. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Best, Luke

Lewis Ganson in Routined Manipulation offered a suggestion that has served me well for more years than I wish to say...
For sweaty hands...run cold water on them backstage. For dry, slick hands...warm water So simple and so effective. Hope it helps you! -Ed

Hey, I have heard the advice of ufo before, but never tried it. I think it would problably work. My friend Peter has this type of liquid. It's called cornoil, I THINK. Not sure though. When I do get the name I'll post it. Anyway, this stuff helps the grip on your hands A LOT. When I do multiplying balls it's 10x better than without it. I'm not sure 'bout sweaty, but it may stop it. Hope this helps.
Thanks... Kyle

Use anti-perspirant spray. High quality non-greasy hand lotion will help also.
I a believe Kannible was referring to Cornhuskers hand lotion for men. |

Wash your hands 5-10 mins before you go on & dry-cold water works well

When washing your hands, the water (warm or cold) washes off natural moisturizers in the skin, making the hands even worse. However, soaking your hands in warm water for 15-20 minutes WILL TEMPORALILY moisturize the hands, but I wouldn't recommend doing it regularly as it has a good chance of actually making the hands worse. I have found that Zim’s Crack Cream can help with dry, cracked hands, but be warned, it smells nasty. It smells like a mix between alcohol and feet so don't perform until 5-10 minutes after applying it, or you may find that no one will get close enough to you for you to actually perform. I would not use the cold water idea. If anyone has ever tried to do manipulations in cold weather, you will find your muscles slow down. It begins to feel as if you're doing manipulations in very slow motion. You will want to keep your hands at least at room temperature before you go on.
I would just use a nice towel and towel dry your hands a bit before going out on stage. That usually works pretty well. Kyle

Many years ago, I had the same problem. I made a mixture of about 4 ounces of rubbing alcohol with about a tablespoon of Mehron Colorset powder. Shake it real good each time you use it, because the powder never really dissolves in the alcohol. Rub just a few drops on the palms of your hands and that should do it. Less is more!!! Too much will leave a white residue on your hands. Clean up later is a breeze... just run your hands under water (no rubbing, scrubbing or soap needed).
Something else that I tried with reasonable success for billiard ball manipulation is a pitcher's rosin bag. Again, less is more.

Luke ,
go to a golfstore (I don't know if that's the right word for it , but you get the idea) they supply great handlotions for .. well , for golfers , so that their hands won't be sweaty . I've used thess kind of lotions during my little tennis carreer and it never failed . I guess it'll work just fine for manipulations , because your hands get a little sticky after using the lotion . Cheers , Philipp

Some great ideas and solutions, The best bet is to go and try some of these out and find out which works best for you. Also keep a towel with you to dry your hands out a but before using any of the lotions.

Zinc sterate/fanning powder. DO not apply when your hands are wet/damp.
Use talc to dry hands, then use ZS after to give them a dry grip. [plz inform me if this is dangerous]

I haven't found any powders or creams that help me ... the best method I have found is to simply have clean hands. I wash my at least 1/2 hour before going on - but everybody is differnt, so just experiment until you figure out what works best for you.
I believe Norm Neilson has a manipulators lotion you may want to try, check with Denny at http://dennymagic.com - he sold me a bottle years ago, you splash it on and it evaporates very quickly. Its hard to describe how it leaves your hands, kind of like a clean sticky. I didn't like it, but if clean hands are not doing it for you maybe try it.

Anti perspirant deodorant works quite well, but apparently isn't too good for the pores on your palms

Be careful with what you put on your hands. Not everything is healthy for your skin.
