I had great fun with the floating match years ago. Since then though, it has been everywhere - even kiddies' magic sets. A friend told me last week that he saw someone selling "my" (!) floating match trick at a stand at a summer fair. Given that you need just one smart*rse in a group to say "Oh - I know that - he's got ****** wrapped around the card," is Cosmosis still do-able in the real world?
(If not it's a tragedy for it's a brilliant concept. If I were Ben Harris I would be *mightily* ***** off and inclined to sue every last swine who ripped me off.) Ben? Best wishes Ross Welford |

I think properly presented it's still a possible stunner. Just use the tip from the instructions to flex the card the first time *without* the rise having put the match under the IET...

When I performed Cosmosis, I didn't go straight to the floating part. With a little imagination you can make the match do other things. When I began the effect I used the tip mentioned by Flip (without the rise). Then I would slowly make only one side of the match rise until it was standing on it's head. This looked really awesome and people would laugh and drop their jaw at the same time because it looked like the match came to life. (for those who have Cosmosis, just reposition the match so that it lays on only one of the t*****'s.) While it was still standing I would let them (or me) gently lift the match to examine it. This little bit of psychology works because if they already handled the card, putting emphasis on the match takes the heat off the card.
Now I took the match back and placed it on the card to do the float. So now the spectators first saw an animation, then a levitation. Try it, it's fun and astonishing.

Hey, Frank
Nice ideas. I agree, and have proved it many times - You can still baffle with Cosmosis if you present it well. I've said it many times before. I used to walk up to dealer tables at conventions and perform this to those who had bought the rip-offs. These were magicians familiar with the working - MAGICIANS. I'd hand them the gimmick card, they'd look briefly and explaim, "mine has threads, how does YOURS work?" Oh, the fun days of youth. Ben Harris PS: It's my fave trick.
