Hi -
I have a gaffed tarot deck for a Rick Lax effect and it worked great at first. It's basically an R/S deck, assembled using roughing wax. The problem I'm having is that, due to one phase of the effect where you reassemble the deck after removing three waxed cards but not their mates, I now have little wax goobers built up on faces that are supposed to be smooth. Over time, that has greatly decreased the effective performance of the deck. So now I'm looking for the best method to do a wax gooberectomy on the smooth faces without damaging the cards. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Ask Mr. Miyagi, he seemed to know about "wax on - wax off". OK, bad joke out of the way, you could try a razor blade, dragging away with the sharp end rather than "pushing" the sharp end (as to cut). That should get the "chunks" out of the way. After that, I am not sure what would remove any leftover stickyness, be it acetone, alcohol, goo-gone... that would not damage the surface coating or the card itself.
Not sure if it helps but good luck with it. Possibly the lack of responses are due to the Holiday.

The best way is to rub the wax off with a soft cotton or chamois cloth. If the wax is very soft, it will be easier to remove if cold. A cold winter day or walk-in freezer would be ideal. Otherwise, pop the card in the freezer for a while then try to rub it off while still in the freezer.
Some folks say to lift the wax off with medical-type adhesive tape, but you run the risk of leaving adhesive residue or pulling off too much. |
